Performance brakes?
Hello
looking to replace my master cylinder on my 1988 Pontiac, firebird GTA it has front disc rear disc cast iron calipers in front and rear.
I don’t believe I have the performance package for the brakes. Those were the aluminum calipers am I correct? Part number for the old master cylinder is 18001814. Thanks for the help.

Re: Performance brakes?
88 Firebird most likely will NOT have "performance" brakes. No matter how many cupholders it has. In that year, all but a TINY handful of our cars were equipped with the TOTAL CRAP cast iron Delco-Moraine discs, if they even had rear discs at all. Which a GTA, in addition to having especially nice and plentiful cupholders, tended to also have the more top-of-the-line brakes, when available, and when ordered. Which was BY FAR unusual.
RPO code for "disc brakes" is J65. Wouldn't be the one that would tell you WHICH disc brakes you have. In 88, if you have J65 BUTT don't ALSO have R7U (Players series spec car) or 1LE ("performance pkg") IN ADDITION TO J65 which the # of Firebirds that had those I think is in the single digits (less than 10), then, ... you have the same ones everybody else from late 84 through 88 has. Personally I'm not a fan of "codes" myself, not least because, all the places you can "look up" those, are FULL OF errors; I'm lazy, I just LOOK AT THE PARTS. Gets it right every time.
If your car has iron calipers on all 4 corners then you have the same 82-88 disc brakes that all the other 82-88 disc brake cars came with, subject to, whether they had SAE or metric fittings. Same prop valve that fits 85-88 will work on yours. Some early 84s had SAE fittings; late 84 through 89 have the valve you need, with metric fittings. If that part # is listed for those then it should work for you. Sorry, can't help you with the part # itself, all I can do is tell you what's distinctive (or not) about it, and what to look for to tell if it will ACTUALLY fit your car or not.
