Help finding "Parking Brake Struts"

Hello I am currently trying to find some parking brake struts online for my 1987 Sport Coupe (2.8L V6), but for some reason I am having unusual difficulty finding this exact part for my rear drum brakes. Most sites online do not have a part that fits my car and Rockauto does not even carry it. Is there a vendor online that you guys know that carries it or can I order a parking brake strut for a different car that will work in my thirdgen? Thank you

I uploaded a picture of the part of the drum brake that I am talking about

Re: Help finding "Parking Brake Struts"

It looks like the OEM parts are the ACDelco 458483 (driver's side) and ACDelco 458484 (pass side). Dorman makes a replacement part (Dorman 21129), which doesn't specifically list f-bodies as compatible, BUT it is for 9.5" GM drums, and looks the same... not sure what the difference would have been between the left and right levers with the original ACDelcos, but the Dorman lever claims to fit both sides. Checking RockAuto, looks like the brake shoes between a '93 Blazer (which Dorman does list as compatible) and the '87 Firebird are identical, as are the drum hardware kits and the brake adjusters... If you can't find NOS levers going off the original part numbers, the Dorman units may do the trick, but I cannot guarantee that with 100% certainty.

Im not sure, thats why I made this post haha. It visually looks like the right part, but the a 1987 camaro is not listed on the compatibility table. Almost all google searches Ive found weirdly do not list the third generation camaro as compatible.

Re: Help finding "Parking Brake Struts"

Knowing GM, they might have just made the same part under different part numbers so they could upcharge replacements on "sporty" models (good example being the 7x crank sensor on the 3.4L V6 4thgen vs the 7x crank sensor on the 3400 V6 Malibus/ Grand Ams and the like.... sensors are identical, but the Firebird ones have their own part number and cost about 4x as much!) There's a pretty good chance that the Dorman 21129 will fit, given that the rest of the parts for the drums match between their listed "compatible" vehicles and the '87 Firebird (drums themselves aside), so it might be worth a shot to try.

AND ACTUALLY, just checked the OEM part cross reference on Dorman's site, 458483 and 458484, which is exactly what thirdgens would have used, so you should be good with the 21129!

It's crazy how many of the GMs used the same brake shoes (514) and brake pads (MKD-154). These part numbers are permanently etched into my brain from my high school and college days working at an auto parts store. This is what memories of my kids have to compete with lol

On a nice spring weekend we probably sold 10 sets of the MKD-154 pads.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: Help finding "Parking Brake Struts"

Indeed: virtually every vehicle with 7½" 10-bolt. A, F, & G body cars, S trucks and Astro vans, for starters.

brake pads (MKD-154)
Every GM car & truck w Delco-Moraine front discs from 69 to sometime in the 90s.

Meaning, you could probably go to a junkyard and get those "struts" off of any one of those vehicles.
