Did he cut out all of the rot and then weld that replacement piece, or is he putting that over top of the original metal? If it's over top, that's going to lead to a nightmare of trying to get the windshield to seat and seal properly, no?
Yeah he's a really nice guy but you have to be patient because he does take his time with the cars that he works on to make sure nothing gets missed, he also own a home renovating business and with all the damage the houses here sustained because of last weekend's thunderstorm he's busy working on home repairs so he won't get back to my car til thursday but I know my car is in good hands based on his client references. On a side note, can I ask you guys something? what's your opinion on decals? should I put them on or just leave the car all black? He said it's really up to me and that if I changed my mind and wanted to put the decals at a later time I can still do so? so what do you guys think? All black or with the decals on? Thanks friends!
Yeah that that was a hell of a storm. Missed us here in ded rear, my impression from istagram was your going for a knight rider look? I could have read it the wrong way, but if so stick to that badging. If not I like the original decals on most cars. I plan on putting them back on my camaro but right now I'm loving the look of satin blacks so not sure how the iroc door stickers would look but... im a few years away from that worry lol

10 - 4 did he reply to your message? Yeah I always wanted to have it all black but then part of me likes the original decaled look too. He's also trying to make a space for the red scanner light in the plastic bumper....don't know how he's gonna do it but he said he will try his best so we'll see!
Hi Dlback, that's pretty much it. The pillars were the worst and the spare tire area, the rear wheel wells looked worst than they really are he grinded it down and the metal underneath was still pretty strong......the other rust areas were small enough and can be grinded down and filled up with body filler. He's shooting for it to be done by first week of July.
Wow very impressive! More work than I'd consider! Good on you for salvaging a great car. FWIW... I HATE doing bodywork! Have I had to do some? Sure. I'm sanding the fiberglass front for Primer now on my 85 but my car is 100% rust free.It was from Penticton. I also paid 6 times as much as you did for your car!
Mine won't be road ready until next year...if I'm lucky.

Thanks bud, yeah he told me it was a bit of a pain making that little space for that scanner but he got it done. He told me to get it appraised after to see how much the value would've jumped after all the work is done, I'm very curious to know as well, tomorrow is basecoat time! He said he already finished final inspection, final sanding and he has already applied the primer on it so we will see! My $500 trans am will have a second lease in automotive life!

Enjoy driving it during the summer time then store it for the winter....no more driving this gal in the winter time that's for sure! I'm more of a cruiser than a racer so power or how fast it goes don't matter much to me as long as I enjoy the journey to my destination with the t tops off I'm happy although I did get a few speeding tickets last year lol....maybe show up as well in some firebird gatherings around town. That's pretty much it.
Serious props to you for taking this thing on. I hope you plan on keeping it forever because you'll feel pretty damn good about it when you finally see the finished product!

Thanks bud, yes I am planning to keep it as long as I can after all this is done and keep it as summer car from now on!
My car also got new 18 inch wheels, windshield and tinting on the back and side windows. He's now just polishing it and the hand over is tomorrow.....I'm beyond excited!

That sure is a lot of work you'r pouring into that. It's good to see a 3rd gen get that much attention. I hope to get a look at it when I'm passing through. I doubt my own ride will be able to make the trip down the QE anytime soon (from the Edmonton area) but here's hoping.
And good luck.

Thank you Skinny z! It was a long 6 weeks of a wait but I think it's worth it.
I'll be honest, that was not the outcome I was expecting. That thing look awesome! Congrats on the "new" ride, I'd be beaming if I watched that car roll up and knew it was mine!

Thanks bud, yeah I am definitely very happy with the end result. I also like the fact that the car is 100% mine and I don't owe any money on it! Some of my neighbours came out to take a look at it too!
Thought I'd do a little catch up on the status of my 85 Z28 project.
" Putting the Z back in Z28!". I am building towards an honest 350hp/350 with about 400 ft lbs and broad torque curve ergo the heads are smaller cc on the runners for low end velocity while still flowing well.;
2000/6000 RPM and to upgrade the power train and suspension to handle it all well. (drag radials, rachet shifter and line lock will be incorporated to make it all work)
KIJIJI has been very good to me to start!
So far all off KIJI:
ZZ4 intake manifold $130
Gone through and hot rodding the original Rochester that came with car. $45 for gasket kit I have a Roch tuning kit so 75 jet 48k rod;G hanger DR rods
Acquired a set of 492 mildly ported by Pro Stock in Edmonton exc like new w/new valves springs etc $750 Really well done on short side runner and bowls.
Comp Cam 1.5 roller bearing roller tipped aluminum rocker arms $120
Fluke: B&M Starshifter that'll bolt right in to my console! $140
Edlebrock timing chain and gears new in box and from an old friend $40
Another fluke and huge score an Eaton Posi and GM 4.10s in mint shape again from someone I knew! $280
Other than taking my time keeping an eye out I have been getting to ready to primer the fiberglass front end. Sanded to 220 and next will be wash it well and tack cloth it just before rattle canning it!
"Horse power sells cars. Area under the torque curve wins races."

Dude you should definitely start your own build thread. Will definitely follow along and watch your progress like the OP''s his car finished nicely! Just a thought.
Okay I'll try and do that later. I will do it here in Canada Regional again though. I find the main group okay but less knowledge on some areas than others. I got good support for my fuel line question however any questions regards Rochesters were roaring silence. FWIW I do know Rochesters but wanted someone to confirm mt thoughts. Not my 1st project ( 3rd) since 2003: 11.5 second 74 Camro; 85 Mustang 302).
I'm happy chatting with locals and it's my first 3rd gen so I will have questions.

Good luck and all the best on your project buddy, all the best!
I've had some luck selling there. Couldn't unload the same intake you bought though. I have a single plane too that I was trying to sell. For multi-port EFI.
Regarding your own thread, if you post only in the Canadian section you tend to get mostly Canadians. There's not a lot of us. The general population is very broad based and there some very smart people too (just maybe not too many Q-Jet folks).
I'll be following your thread when you get around to it.

agreed. I may be the only dude from Ded Rear on here haha but I get a lot of ideas from build pics no matter where they come from. And yes lots of guys around the world willing to help!
I'm sure I'm the only one from Millet! Nice and close to Castrol though.
Looks like we could bring quite a 3rd gen contingent to the track when everyone is ready to go. That's next summer for me. Still need to build another shortblock as the old 350 has too many hard miles on it. Nice fresh heads though. And I've been spec'ing my cam over the last few months. Can't decide if I'm building a drag racing engine or another all round cruiser.

UMM I may need another year yet... She sits like this at the moment...
and I haven't even began thinking about engines haha but im still having fun. Haven't been to Castrol yet, future son inlaw has a drag car he runs out there, not this year of course. **** you covid!

It would seem that if you're going to make a build thread then you post here. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/members-camaros/
Otherwise, I post in the section that most closely relates to the subject. My engine questions go in the Tech/General Engine forum. I've posted in the Exhaust forum when I'm working through what the latest is in that category. And so on.
The only thing I find with a build thread is that they can very lengthy. Then questions you ask go unseen. In that case I'll pose specific questions in the related forum and I can link them to my personal thread if I wish. For the record, I don't have a build thread. I just post in whatever forum that suits the question I'm asking.
Hope that helps.
Thanks for the help Skinny Z. That link seems to be an "auto appearance" thread. I don't get too wound up about pretty and I do get very wound up about performance. I do know to go to the various sections with questions. I'll fish around and see if a "build thread" works somewhere but paint is second last AFTER i've gone thru the rough and tumble out at a drag strip. FWIW paint is second last as the car came with a complete brand new interior in the boxes! The interior and new weather stripping that also came with are last.
I think you'll find the word "build" very predominate in that particular forum. It's a members forum not the detailing and appearance one (which also exists).
But like I said, as I don't have a build thread per se, I ask my questions in the appropriate places. Mostly engine stuff. But I've posted in the transmission forum. The driveline one too. Seems to work and and I can get the information or share the same as things develop.
I put together a slideshow of the entire process from when I got her as a $500 car last year to its current physical condition......I kept everything under the hood original as I am pretty happy with it and like I said I'm not much of a racer but more of a cruiser.

Very cool video. Your son looks like he's pretty stoked! Your body guy did some phenomenal work!
is your interior pretty good or u gonna start some work in there?

Yeah he is and he already asked me for the keys to it! hahahaha and my daughter who will be learning to drive next year was asking me if she can drive the car around the neighbourhood too! lol fun times...yeah the interior needs some work well I mostly got the seat covers ready to install and the headliner is still in good condition...the fabric on both the sun visors though are tearing apart.

Update I just switched my insurance to Hagerty, I was with Intact but switched to Hagerty since they agreed on the value of my trans am at $12,000 after the bodywork/rustwork and the new paintjob that it got last month so that in case it got into an accident and it's a total loss they'll pay the agreed value of the vehicle....my payment is $235 for the whole year which Intact couldn't match.
Glad you posted that. If you don't mind I've a couple of questions.
Did they put on any constraints regarding mileage? Or distance from home? I like to drive and from here to Ontario is part of the plan.
The other things that I'm interested in are modifications. Lift the hood on my car and it's pretty obvious it didn't roll off the factory floor like that. Likewise with the transmission and rear axle. And that's the part I want to have covered. Your insured value would just about replace the drivetrain whereas the body is, well, let's say it's nothing like your finished product. It could use a paint job.
