How to tell positve from negative..??

Recently picked up a set of factory 4 x6's and 6 x 9's from a late model pontiac . They seem to have a plug and/or both male connectors. Nothing is marked + or- though , but on the plastic plug there is a very small ( a ) and ( b), male connector to either side of plug. Any experience out there ......thanks.....Also would anyone know what goup of wires on my '89 firebird radio would be the negative or positive wires......Thanks agian

Car: 91 Camaro RS Update: Sold Camaro, now own a "91" Corvette.
Engine: Corvette L98 TPI
Transmission: 700R4
Just get a 9 volt battery and connect it to one of the speakers, if the speaker cone pushes out, then whatever lead (a or b) is connected to the + on the battery is the positive. If the speaker cone sucks in, the leads are reversed. As for the factory + and -, the light colored wires including yellow are the - and the dark colored wires are the +. Hope this helps.

That really works....Never imagined, will give it a try though. Let me get this straight. Take a 9V "toy" battery , put 2 wires on there, touch to both termimals Depending on the direction the cone moves due to what lead the battery positive is touching. This won't harm my speakers ,huh? Thanks GKK

it doesn't have to be a 9V batt. a AA or whatever will work fine. It won't hurt a thing. Just connect it, see where it moves and disconnect.

dont leave it connected and go have lunch or something tho.. its fine for a few aseconds, but speakers arent too happy with a constant dc wave for long periods of time..

So voltage wont matter , As long as it's small DC?....Thanks Everyone....Hoping to return my car to having a complete factory radio look and sound this weekend.. When I got the 89' Firebird the audio dept. was completely deleted(non-factory that is). Well, there was some 4 x 6 Alpines up in the dash though. Not sure if they work though. If they turn out okay are they worth selling????

The battery trick will work for telling you + & - on the speaker. (most of the time the larger tap is the positive side). If you need to tell what wire comming from the stareo is + or -, look at your wiring harness conected to your head unit. You should know about the white, gray, green, purple wires. Look at those, follow them from the back of the head unit to the wiring harness. Just match up the wiring harness wires to the factory wires and you will find out were al the speaker wires need to be connected to.
