Kick panel install, but not pods?

I've been reading and reading and I still haven't found the answer. OK, I understand the thought about why mounting in the kick panel area is desirable. What I want to know is if anyone has cut into the car at that point and then used wood/fiberglass etc. to give a mounting surface. So, what I mean is if this file shows up, that at point A, the speaker would be flush against the body, and at point B, the speaker would be 1 inch or whatever away from the body in order to have it pointing the the driver's general direction etc.

I looked at it, but it seemed like too much work. Not only that, but it isn't very deep there anyway from what I remember.
