Problem with something (car dies)

I have this problem right now with my car dying when I shut it off after having my stereo on. It doesnt have to be up loud, just on. I have to shut my stereo off before I shut off the car and then rev it some or else it wont start the next time. I've been told that my altinator might be goin out and I was wondering if my stereo caused that, and if that is right. It wasnt to bad to begin with but now I can bearly have my stereo on or else my car wont start. thanx for any help.

first question...do you have a cap?? (stiffning cap) that usually takes the blunt of all your power problems in a system...and if you dont expect to replace the alternator every 6-8 months (roughly) because its working harder to keep a steady flow of current to the amp/subs, whereas the cap holds at all times 12volts(i think) so it just pulls from there...

any other questions post back and ill get back to you

i dont have a cap either, but i just bought a new alternator so im ok for a bit..ive never ran a cap in my setup..never seen the need for one either...but some people swear by them,i guess its all in the personal choice of the owner

don't do that, you can fry out your computer.. the correct way to check if the alternator is working is to place a voltmeter across the battery terminals when the car is off, start the car, and the voltage should increase..
