6x9 question

I put a pair of 6x9's in my 79' toronado it had 4x10's in there originaly so i cut out some metal and mounted them but the holes are square so theres some space around the speaker. i have an alpine cda-7892 cd player and when i turn it up over 20 they start to distort. they're infinity referance 2 ways and hold 100w constant 300w max. is this because i don't have the front of the speaker seperated from the back? i know i don't have the positive and negative mixed up. thanks in advance.

the mounting shouldn't cause distortion unless it's vibrating. As long as it's secure, that should be fine. The only thing I can think of is that those speakers only handle down to 51hz. The lower frequencies are probably making it distort. Your best option is to install a crossover that will let you cut off the lower frequencies before they get to the speakers. If you have subs in the car, cut the 6x9s at around 70hz, just so you can really blast them without problems.
