Okay audioheads... riddle me this...

While I have rebuilt more than few engines, tranny's etc, I have ZERO experience when it comes to car audio.. except for wiring things up and turning the volume up

My 85 IROC came with a so called "system".

It has (2) 10" subs mounted in the locking cargo area panel in back, (2) nice Pioneer 6x9's in the side factory locations, and from the sound, factory 4x6's in front ( only one works ). The head unit is an older CD changer controller capable Kenwood cassette player. There are (2) amps mounted in the back well under the speakers and a crossover... One amp powers the 6x9's and one the subs. Now moving on...

The subs are a no name crappy brand, and I plan on replacing 'em, but they just take up too much usable space for my taste. So I haven't decided what I'm going to do yet... for me the system will probably be the last thing I spend $$$ on, as long as it sounds decent in the meantime..

Anyway, the sound has too much treble / highs in it... I've adjusted the head unit and that's not it..

I guess I'm asking what's a good general setting for this thing? All the different HZ'a, outputs, High, low , mid etc... blah...

I just want it to sound decent...

Any advice on the settings of this thing let me know

Thanks

ok go to the sub amp set the crossover to LP, look for a dile or switch with 40, 60 80 120 or something like that i personally would set it on 60 but put where it sounds best to u. hopes this helps.also look on the crossover and do the same for sub amp

Are they in boxes or just screwed into that panel?

Maybe you should get a stealth box to go where your spare tire is/was. Takes up much less room that way. I didn't want to sacrifice my spare, so I just built a half box - it only is half as high as the well is. The box comfortably fit a Pioneer 12 inch, and there was enough volume to port, so I went for it.

Anyway, the sound has too much treble / highs in it... I've adjusted the head unit and that's not it..
Only one working 4x6 and still too much treb? Hmmm.....Okay, I'd go to the sub amp and turn it up a few notches then. If you can't turn down the treble, turn up the rest!

Turn the crossover to LOW to pass all the frequencies below the setting to the subs, and then set it to somewhere around 200-ish.

P.S. Check out http://www.fbodyaudio.com from time to time. I'm writing a couple tech articles on third gen installation, and they'll be posted there sometime soon.

60?!? That means it only permits frequencies below 60hz! And you want to do this on both amps? Bass is generally everything below about 200 hz. Only bass drums and a FEW bass guitar notes are that low, and also electronic synthesisers.

Take my sub, for instance. Pioneer TS-W304C, if you want to look up it's stuff. In a 1.2 cubic foot sealed box, it's maximum ouput is 89 db at approximately 150hz and continues that SPL to about 400 hz. At only 60 hz, it only puts out 86 db, which is a whole lot less SPL than it's maximum output. Moreover, crossing both the 6x9's and the sub down below 60 hz means that there will only be ONE 4x6 to play EVERY sound from 61 hz and up !?! That's just plain wrong. The 6x9 has neither the cone area, the power handling, nor the frequency response to produce bass levels. The only time crossovers should be put that low is if you're using a SUBbass driver AND a MIDbass driver, in which case the midbass driver would take the frequencies from 61 hz to about 200 or so, and that would require a bandpass filter to allow 61 to 200 to go to the midbass drivers.

Ya you definately dont want your sub at 60. I run two 15 inch bass monsters and I dont even set it to 60... Best advice I can offer is try and get a test cd or go on kazaa and do a search for 20hz-20khz. This will be a minute or so long gradual synthesizer made change from 20hz-20khz and will give you a good idea of what areas you need to re-inforce or tune up to make a good range.
