What do all of the colors in the stereo harness go to?

Can anyone list what each color wire of the stereo harness is? When I bought my car the harness had been hacked and the connector was removed. Now all I have is a bunch of wires with no names, and no idea what each one is.

I have the chiltons manual for 1982 to 94 birds but it doesn't list anything on what each wire is. And I don't have a GM service manual. I'd love to install this stereo today as I've been without a radio for a week now. Then again, real cars don't need a stereo because the engine is just SOOOoooooo good.

All hail Jim!!!

Actually, I was out trying to figure out the rest of my problems. ^_^

Now, if i only knew what type of harness I originally had. Guess I'll pull the speaker wires and check those out. The colors will tell me I think.

the wire colors probably won't reveal much. Both harness styles used the same wire colors. 89 may still have been a transition year. In 88 most cars had the old style harness, but the GTAs and TAs with the premium stereo & steering wheel controls used the newer style harness. It's possible that by 89 they all used the new harness, but I might be a year early.

Well, I got some juice going, I wired it up. It wouldn't turn on. A volt meter revealed that the 12v ignition line for the radio harness is only pushing about 8v! Something is not right here.

Checked it at the battery, and the alternator, its still 12v to 13v there. I don't know where to go next to test for a voltage drop. All of my accessories are running SLOWLY.

Is it possible for the radio not to turn on if there isn't enough voltage available? Say 8v to 10v? Its what I'm running on average.

You can check at the fuse block. If your voltage is HITHERE.k. there then you probably have HITHERE frayed wire/loose connector somewhere behind the dash. If it tests at 8v there as well then check your battery cables (make sure they're tight, no corrosion) and work your way back to the accessory wire into the interior. You may find it's HITHERE damaged or detatching wire(s) at the back of the fuse block. That happened to my brother's car. He could only get the interior lights to work intermittently, turned out it was HITHERE loose wire on the back of the fuse block.

Yeah, a few times when I drive on some rough roads the voltmeter will jump to what the batt, and alternator are putting out. Around 13v or more. But then it'll die. But while the voltmeter is at 13v everytying works quickly.

As it is, I can't drive my car at night because the lights are bright enough, and the turn signals are bright enough either from lack of power.

Joe, ALL my accesories are affected, its not just a radio specific thing. Check out my post titled "Severe Electrical Problems" in the electrical board.

I WILL fix this car. If I can fix the short then my stereo should work. Course I got some other electrical problems that'll probably require pulling the dash to examine.

I pulled the gauge pod a few days ago and cleaned all the contacts. Didn't fix anything but my gauges are alot cleaner now. ^_^
