Name that weird substance under the carpet in my trunk.
Name that weird substance under the carpet in my trunk.
This is in my 98 Firebird Convt... I took the carpet out (it's a one piece molded carpet) to put dynamat in, this is what I found:

Can anyone tell me what the purpose is? Should I cut my dynamat to accomodate this stuff, or just dynamat over the top?

1998? Maybe GM started putting in sound deadener from the factory...? Would make sense, since the muffler's right below that spot... maybe people complained that the cars were too loud?
Depends on if the dynamat wants to stick to that stuff; you could always pad the rest of the sheetmetal with dynamat, "around" what the factory gave you.

I kinda figured that it was factory material, since a convertible is likely to be even louder (more susceptible to road noise) than any other car, I can understand putting sound deadener in...
Why they would put it only in the trunk is weird, if you ask me... the exhaust couldn't be any quieter!
I don't think I'll have any problem dynamatting over the top... the deadener already installed is quite sticky on the side facing out, it should probably seal fine.
