12" Alpine Type R, or 10 Solo Baric L7
Well, lets say Im going to have $200 to spend on just a sub(s) and box. Well Ive got a friend that has a brand new 10" L7 in a sealed kicker box, and I think I could get it for around 200 or so. Im either thinking about that, or possibly 1 12" Alpine type R. This is going into a car trunk, so it will sound different then it would in a hatch. This friend of mine has a 97 trans am, with a ten solo baric in the side compartment in the back, its not even a square one and it pounds, Im just wondering what the 10 L7 would sound like in my car. Right now I have a JL 12 WO, but its not mine, and its going to be gone soon so I want to have my own. Oh and just to let you know, I have a Rockford 360a2 to power something with. I kind of wanted the 10 L7 because its a small enclosure and I could still have room for other things in the trunk. I dont know just give me your comments and suggestions, I appreciate it. Also I listen to mostly like Metallica and Red Hot Chilli Peppers and stuff like that, occasionally rap.

I say Alpine. In my experience a square Solobaric will sound awful if you have too small an enclosure or don't throw gobs of power at them.

well the enclosure that its in is actually made for it, and I want a nice clean tight bass, and I think this may have that since its in a sealed box. I dont know, Im pretty sure that my amp has enough power to throw to it.

Go with kicker.
Well, you are comparing apples to oranges here. But, geez an almost ne L7 10 inch with a box for 200 bucks????? That's a steal, nab it while you can.
I am not familiar with the 360a2 but as long as you can get a SOLID 300 watts RMS to that woofer it's gonna sound sweet. The kicker sub in the proper box with the right amount of power will outwoof the Type R anyday of the week.

Believe it or not, the solobaric is designed to move alot of air even when they are in the tiniest box.
I would ditch the alpine idea and go with the solobaric.
I have 2 12" L7's in my hatch in my custom made box and the suckers DO NOT need that much room.
in fact, the alpine will require more air to go boom.
lol my whole stereo is Kicker... all 10 speakers.

I actually have a good comparison on this one. My brother has the new model of the 10" L7 solobaric, and i have the new model of the Alpine 12" type R. Many people will say that the L7 will outpound because you can run 2x as many rms, but i ran my type R on 500rms for about a month and it took it like a trooper. Most say that it will run well with more rms than recommended, and they were right. Honestly, they both sound really good. The L7 will probably outhit the Type-R, but the Type-R will sound better any day. The type-r seems to handle lower bass a little better than the L7, but that could be the whole 12" to 10" thing. Although, I must admit the Solobarics are really coming into a more complete package, not just loud bass. I am trying not to be biased though because im an Alpine guy. Either way, i dont think you will lose. Pricewise... i got my Alpine mono amp ($135) and Type-r ($115) for about $250 which is pretty good. The kicker costs $140 plus a good enough amp to power it right. I custom built the box though. I would try to stay away from the prefabricated boxes if possible, unless specifically built for that sub. Hope this helps you.
