2 Kicker Comp VR 12's

I'm in the process of building a system for my car. So far I have nothing but am doin alot of research before I buy anything. The one thing I do have an idea on is the KICKER COMP VR 12's. I want to get two of them but don't know what amp to get and or if I need more than just an amp ( cross over, new head unit, etc ). I know I need a box for the subs and I haven't gotten that yet either. I have a KOSS deck in the car. I like the features it has but is this brand crap? It does skip over a rough bump. These speakers have 400 RMS watts and max out at 800 Watts peak. I don't know if I should get DVC 2 ohm or 4 ohm since thats all they come in. Should I get a single box for the subs or should the subs have their own chamber? What kind of amp should I get ( brand name, how many watts, channels, ohms, etc ) Do I need a cross over ( what does that do anyways? ) Should I get a different deck? Should I even get these speakers? What guage wire should I use? I would need an HO alternater wouldn't I?

So many questions, I really don't know crap about this kind of stuff. But thanx for helpling out. You guys have helped me out alot. And once again, I'm turning to you guys.

I have 2 Comp VRs in my car...dual 4 ohm voice coil model. Voice coils are wired in parallel and so are the subs. I am powering mine with a JBL 600.1(1 ohm stable) but you could go for a 1200.1 if you want more power for it. These amps are pretty much the best for your money. Yes, you can buy better, but for the price they can't be beat.

Each sub should have its own chamber. Look at the tech specs for the subs to find out the ideal box size.

You shouldn't need a cross over, if you get the JBL it is a mono subwoofer amp with a low pass filter so it will get rid of the highs.

As long as your reciever has a preamp output you should be fine, however, I would definitly try and find something better(Alpine, JVC digifine, etc.) if I had the money.

As far as wiring, I would go 2 or 4 guage(walmart sells the Scoche(sp?) kit for pretty cheap) from the battery to the distribution block back of car and then split it off to 8 guage to the amp. This allows lots of overhead and you won't have to rewire if you get another amp.

Not sure about the alternator, I need a new one, but I don't think the subs have anything to do with it. Maybe a capacitor would be a good thing if you have the money.

Hope this helps.

Stick the Comp VR 12's in at least a 2.0 sealed per chamber. If you can't get that big, step down to the Comp VR 10's and do 1.25/1.50 sealed.

The JBL 1200 will work fine for the 12's, but if you step down to the tens, do the JBL 600.1

Polecat, I have two 12" VRs on the BP600.1 with around 1.2 to 1.5 per sub...am I better off sound wise going down to 1 sub with 2.0 and porting it?

I would just keep the two. One with more power might be louder, but you have a great setup 'as is'...do you have polyfill in the enclosure?

I don't have anything inside the box right now, it really only measures 1.0 cubic feet per chamber. I really don't like the way it sounds right now, although that might just be tuning. I may end up building a new box anyway...

try a pound of polyfill, but 2.0 per woofer is much better.

Thanks Polecat

Thanks stiers, that was just the answer I was lookin for. You explained everything perfectly. The head unit I have now is starting to screw up anyways. Do you have a specific kind that you like? How big of an amp should I get ( how many watts ) I figure at least 800 since the speakers RMS at 400. Should I just get a 2 channel or more? What ohms speakers should I get 2 or 4 ohms?

Head units vary, so I'd just pick a good name brand one that suits your needs and pocketbook. There are alot of good ones out there.

On the amp, for a good inexpensive one, get the JBL 600.1. Sure, it may only do 300+ to each sub, but I would do that and two DVC 2 subs.

Ought to work awesome.

oopps....I guess I meant stiers.........but thanks anyways Polecat. So I should go with the DVC 2 huh. I'm not really lookin for a cheap amp, i'd rather spend the extra money and get an amp that will pound these speakers but at the same time not really give me any problems, Like over heating or stuff like that.
