Mine is about 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch thick and it is very strong. My box is also built into the well but uses MDF for the bottom only the top is glass.

that sound better, mine is the opposite, mine will be glass on teh bottom and mdf covered in glass on the top
i didnt want to site there and make it 3/4 thick if i didnt have to, 1/4 sounds good as long as it is strong enough

after you got the 3 layers and dryed yah its no where near a 3/4",,,something you can do is go buy a gallon of kitty hair fiberglass now and spread a good think layer on the inside to build it up....thats how i got mine thicker.

yeah 1/4 inch will be plenty for the bottom. Mine is only glass on top and the glass holds two mdf rings that the subs mount to and the 1/4 inch is plent to support the weight and stress/strain of the subs. The glass makes the two 12's look like they were molded into the back of the car. Fiberglass boxes in the back well of thirdgens makes for a very clean look. I'm not sure if teh mdf makes it sound better than glass alone but it is alot stronger and also fairly heavy. Good luck on your project.

yah 1/4'' is ok but if thicker, it will give you deeper bass. Less vibrating and less sound will excape thru the box....thats why mdf boxes are 3/4" or 1" not 1/4" thick.

Yes the extra strength will make it sound better. I build highend loudspeakers in my spare time. The reduction in vibration due to the strength of the enclosure will minimize 2nd and 3rd harmonic distortions. Giving you better sound. How much better is negligible and due to the quality of car audio components and road noise may not be noticable. Bracing the box will yield greater benefits than a super thick enclosure if you are interested. The easiest way to do this would be to glass in mdf or hardwood stringers and braces. That would make a substantially stronger enclosure.
how exactly do you make a box half fiberglass and half mdf. Could someone maybe show me a picture? I dont understand how to get the two together without air leaks. I want to start a project like this soon, but im want to have everything figured out.

yah alum foil two rolls should do....
all the other stuff i got from walmart, except the matting and clear resin and kittyhair i got at Canadian tire...home dopot should have that ,,not sure we dont have one close to me. Dont go buying expencive stuff most of the stuff will be chucked out anyhow....mmmmm
some tips are:
- get an extra tube of luqid fiberglass hardener (99cents)
-get less then a quart of acetone to wipe down your plastic so tape will stick to it.
- buy good quality ducttape use it on the plastic (sticks good) then put masking tape over that to draw on.
- expect to ruin brushes (buy cheapest ones you can find)
- use about 1/2 of gallon of clear resin on first few layers of matting (1 at a time tho letting dry inbettween) then use the gallon of kittyhair after harden to make walls thicker. Use the other 1/2 of gallon of clear and left over matting to repair any week spots and to mate the top board on.
-spray the inside of it with undercoating
here a make a list of the stuff youll need and aprox prices i paid (canadian funds tho)
-quart of acetone ($6 or so i forget)
-wide masking tape ($2 or so)
-Duct tape ($3 or so)
-two boxes of alum foil ($4 for both)
-rags (free if you can)
-plasitic (garbage bags to protect car) free if you can
-cardboard (free)
-spray can of glue ($2-3)
-perment maker (free)
-scissors (free)
-fiberglass matting (measure how much you need and x by 2-3layers, get plyable kind not the stiffer stuff) comes in 4foot wide roll by by the foot (10-15 bucks i think)
-gallon of kittyhair fiberglass (20bucks)
-gallon of clear fiberglass resin (20bucks)
-extra hardener (liquid for the resin)(99cents)
-paint brushes (CHEAP as you can find maybe like 3or 4 of them)
-piece of hard plastic or metal to spread kitty hair (free)
-rubber gloves (like dishwashing kind) (i had an pair anyhow dont know how much)
-mdf top board (holes cut for subs) and a divider with some screws ($5-10)
-jigsaw (you may wanna buy some 2buck new blades, mdf is slow to cut at times)
-can of ashfault undercoating ($4)
-metal paint can or somethinf to mix you fiberglass with (free)
-few sticks of wood or metal or something to mix the fiberglass and hardener together with (it can get thick so its got to be strong)(free)
And make a face plate out of anything you want or sand it down and bondo and paint or carpet it, whatever.
Did i leave anything out??????

Got any more pix of the glassing process? I mean like, the glass itself stuck inside the hatch? How much does the box weigh alone? How thick? The reason I ask for pix is because I was wondering how you got the fiberglass sheets to stick to the sides of the car. I guess you could use the spray adhesive then drench the sheets. I didnt think of that till after I made the box lol.
If all this is in your page, could you tell me the page # that its on? My dsl is really acting up and loads so slowly I cant stand it because I'm so impacient

i just lined the area i wanted to glass with tin foil, and then applied the first layer directly to that, when it was dry i took it out of the back of the car and peeled the tin foil off of it, and then i had my mold...
hope that helps some.

hmm... its just on the tin I used, it kinda stuck to the fiberglass real good and wasnt that easy to just peel off. *srugs*

no idea if this will work, but a though just popped into my mind, what if you put down your foil and then put a layer of wax on it, would that make it easier, guess i will have to try that when i make my kicks.
