Bose system

I just purchased second IROC which has Bose system with an aftermarket Pioneer head unit. The sound comes from the rear locking cover speakers, and sounds really weak. I looked at putting some 6X9 in the rear sills but there is an empty square with insulation, and no holes for speakers. Here are my ?'s

-is the Bose system worth keeping and working with
-are the speakers in back amplified
-do I need an interface to use them
-could 6X9 be added by bolting in a panel from non Bose car

Any general info/ advice about the system would be welcome.
Thanks!

I would,....... It's rare and sounds MUCH better than factory stock Delco set-ups.

-are the speakers in back amplified
ALL BOSE speakers are amplified

-do I need an interface to use them
Yes,......... You might have one installed already. Without the interface the sound from the speakers would be overpowered. ( a full signal from the head unit and then boosted again at the Amps before reaching the speakers.)

Since your complaint is week sound - there might be a problem with the interface settings (if equipped ) or the amps may be dead or disconnected ( HACK job !)

-could 6X9 be added by bolting in a panel from non Bose car
BOSE 6x9's from a Buick, Caddy or a Nissan can be installed in the rear seat panels...... You can't mount them in the hatch cover. You would need to either slice into the existing hatch wiring or modify the existing hatch wiring to reach the rear seat mounting locations.

Since your Car is an 89 and *should* have the little 4" bose speakers; you could also upgrade to a 91-92 BOSE hatch cover with the larger 6" BOSE "GOLD" subwoofers. ( If you can find one ! )

Hope that helps !

the bose system are great for factory equipment, but compared to aftermarket stuff, they really dont compare. i would say dump the bose stuff unless you are completely going back to factory. in that case, aftermarket would probably end up being cheaper and easier. if you want to go all out, get a 4-ch amp for the interior speakers. you will be alot more satisfied with the sound.
