SUB and AMP for under $200

Ok...I need recommendations for a budget system (one sub 10 or 12...and an amp to fully power it) i'm looking to have all this come in around $200 give or take some...I"m building my own box and will also get the amp kit installed eventually...I really need some suggestions...I know you get what you pay for but I'm sure there is some good stuff for around $200...Thanks alot...

check out elemental designs Kx series at :

http://www.edesignaudio.com/ep2/12kx.htm

as for an amp id look over at :

http://www.millionbuy.com/sosrubang.html

port the Kx to get the most use out of the power from that amp and you should have a pretty decent affordable system.

id also check out:
www.partsexpress.com - they have great prices on dayton subs
www.cbrstereo.com - they were running a special on PG ti subs

i also believe that ID has a rather afforadable sub you may want to check into

EBay it

Proper system design can make up for less than perfect equipment.

You can get one of the audiobahn aw1006Q subs for about $100.
They will easily handle 800 RMS, Have a piston travel of almost 1" in each direction, and if I remember right have a resonance freq of about 35HZ in a ported box.

Take the time to properly design a ported box, get a decent amp to push it ( obtainable on ebay for cheap too), get a nice HU with decent processing, low S/N ratio, and 4v preouts, and you'll be set.

Here's an example of an awesome amp that you could probably land for under $150. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=18796

With a nice head unit, a good ported box, and the fact that you can really take advantage of cabin gain in your hatchback, it will play plenty clear and loud. You might come in at over $200, but It'll be well worth it

Oh, and I had a setup really similar to that in my 01 TA, and it played about 25% louder and was alot clearer sounding than a lincoln that had 2 of the huge fosgate amps, and 4 12" square solobarics in sealed boxes.

That's one 10" sub louder than 4 12's
He wasn't to happy, but what can you do

the box design is what will make or break your system not the equipment. with only $200 you can make it sound very decent to most people's ears.

i would look on ebay for a us acoustics amp...some of them are in the $50 range used and the quality is great. Then i would go with something like an adire shiva for $125 and you're set.

I just bought a Kenwood 1000watt amp off of Ebay for 100$ so anything is possible if you have the patience. There's also a whackload of MTX Subs on there 12"ers that are going for 30-40$. Only other way I can think of doing this is the wal-mart way and getting a 300watt Jensen Amp and 575pmpo 175rms Jensen sub. I had that sub as my first sub in my Tempo. Whole setup costed me 200$CDN including an enclosure that was custom built for the box.

so now you're looking for a sub or subs for $100 or less correct?

http://www.carstereopro.com/Audiobahn/awp210q.htm

but my choice would be
http://www.cerwinvega.com/products/m...ga/vega10.html

you can find them for $90 at http://www.thezeb.com

TheZEB usually has some great deals up on ebay too. I just bought a $250 clarion deck for my beater, and only paid $99 plus shipping.

You can also pick up monster cable 4awg wiring kits for about $30 on ebay, and a decent set of RCA's can be had for dirt cheap. If all you are running is subs though, and not an amp for mids and highs you can get away with lower quality rca's and not realize noise in the music.

80.00 for a wiring kit?? You could have gone to walmart and get the no name same exact gage wires for like 30.00...The fosgate, name brand wires are too expensive!

But as for your system man. Search on ebay and in online catalogs like crutchfield.

I've never bought walmart wire, but I've noticed that some of the cheaper wires isn't as flexable because they use thicker copper strands.

Gold plated wires and a 0 gage ground, and 4 gage power bought from a real store, with a real name will pop the price up just a tad

I think I have decided to go with the 10 inch elemental design e10Kx.44 / x.22...I have not yet decided on an amp yet but am thinking the JBL 300.1 is my best bet...

1. Will the JBL 300.1 give my sub enough power?

2. Should i get the Dual 2 ohm or the Dual 4 ohm version of the sub?

3. Which version would give me max power from that amp?

4. Are there any other amps that ya'll would recommend for the money that would be a better alternative?

Thanks for all the replies so far...Please keep them coming as I'm open to suggestions...I'm also coming close to completing my custom lower well box for my Trans Am...for a first timer its turning out pretty good...I owe alot of this to all who help on this board, so once again thank you!

that amp will put out most of its power at 2 ohms so you should get the dual 4 ohm sub. Apparently those amps can get down to 1 ohm and be stable but if you want to switch amps in the future its easier to find a 2 ohm stable amp than a 1 ohm stable. Plus if you want to add another sub you can get another dual 4 ohm and then get a big 1 ohm stable amp, which are fairly easy to find

ok i was in the same problem as u a strict budget luckily i found a great system locally fomr a friend a used 60 wat kenwodd amp for 100 and 2 oz audio vector series 10s for 100 they are awesome way more then a basic system i love em they really hit hard.

they dont sound the greatest or heaviest hitters w/ hatch up or outside the car, (all i get outside is rattles lol) but inside w/ hatch shut trust me they are more then enough!!!!!

sounddomain.com think thats how its spelled anyways soudn domain has oz vector 10s for 80 a piece and then that wil aloow u to go a lil over a 100 for an amp.
i strongly recommend older used amps seems to me by experience the older ones work n sound best n put out more then the new ones.

i have one old california malibu 120 amp and a new legacy 60 watt and my legacy seems to run right w/ the lil 120 maybe a lil more watts.

walmart onlien has an spl amp for 100 havent tried it but thought about it. and summit racing sales a pioneer amp jensen and power acoutic for under and right around and a lil more then 100 depending on how many watts u want.

i had a friend run 2 pioneer 10s w/ a 300 watt jensen in his truck really shook the whole car badly sounded awesome tho blow yur mind and then he switched to jl w6s and had the same amp on them they hit harder then ever needed. so jensen sounds good i think the amps push out good and jls kick *** and u can get a jl 10 for around 100 the w0's
and u wont be disapointed there either.

Assuming you mean $200 for just the amp and sub, you can squeak by with something of somewhat tolerable quality. If you mean $200 total including installation accessories and wiring, forget it.

There are bargains to be had if you buy used, or buy closeout stuff. Sounddomain has the Phoenix Gold Tantrum subs on clearance right now at fantastic prices, and paralleling one of their dual 4-ohm coil subs will get the most out of a mono sub amp. BUT... the stuff I listed below is stuff that's available all the time, so you know it'll be available regardless of when you decide to buy.

Anyway, $200. Sound quality first:

amp: JBL BP300.1, $130.50 at Ikesound
Sub: 10" Dayton Quatro Part Number 295-550, $64.59
Installation accessory: 6 pack Natural Light, $ 4.91

Total: $200.

If you want SPL and don't mind sacrificing a bit of sound quality:

Amp: Same thing
Sub: 2x Dayton 12" DVC Part Number 295-490, $77.50 for both

Total: Close enough.

Wire a pair of these DVC subs with all 4 coils in parallel, and you get a 2 ohm load. This doubles the output of the amp, plus the 2 12s will get louder than 1 10".

If people didn't get so hung up on brand names and appearance, there would be a LOT more Dayton stuff in cars. Why people spend the same money on garbage like Volfenhag is beyond me.

You could have mine....a Jensen 460 watt amp, it is 230 x 2 rms. And 1 or both 12" polk subs. They are 165w rms and 365 peak.
I know people don't really like these brands, especially Jensen, but they hit hard, and get the job done. All is original packaging, I'm looking for $175 for the three items.

one car of mine has: a kenwood CD player, pioneer premier 6" rear speakers and infinity 4" speakers in the front...cost: nothing, not a cent....and I didn't steal it either.

my girlfriends' car: pioneer DEH-2100 .....oh....nothing for that one either.....sheesh, this stuff is so expensive!

sometimes you get hook-ups just for being cool!

some of my best systems have been done on a budjet. A few of my friends have bought someone's old stuff out of the paper and made out really well. A sub and an amp is no big deal to find for under $200.

As for wiring: most kits are made for the electrically illiterate, if you know what you are doing, you can make due with ordinary wiring.
I've never done this, but any dumpster behind a stereo shop probably has all kinds of wire in it. You can make an electrically continous piece if you're into soldering, same with RCA plugs, get enough of those and there really isn't much you can't do. You can find the ring terminals and stuff at NAPA, Pep Boys and hardware stores.........like I said, I've never soldered power cables together before, but there is no reason it wouldn't work.

If you can find a whole-sale electrical supply store, or electric motor re-wiring place, you are in business!

No splicing with stranded, just mesh the strands and tin it up.

Hey Yall...been a long time since I started this one...I have just about got my system set up...took all day yesterday and would have tried it out except the damn side mount battery terminal wasn't long enough to mount the ring for the power wire on there too...so I'll pick up one of those adapter extension things today. For my setup I chose:

1. An elemental designs ed10kx.22...cost me like $95 shipped...took about 3 weeks to get here as they are going through some supply troubles but the sub looks awesome! Nice looking quality.

2. I got a Rockford fosgate 401s punch amp for about $133 shipped from ikesound. Ikesound lost the my original amp which was a 301s and they ran out of stock so sent me the 401s for the same price...took like a month to get but its all here now.

I gotta be easy on the sub its power rating rms is 150-400, and I'm wiring my DVC 2ohm sub in series to get a 4ohm load which will give me 400 watts in mono at 4ohms. I'll have to go easy on the gains. I built a nice lower well box that had right at 1 cubic foot of airspace...however since I will be pushing the sub to its max I had to install a baffle and cut the airspace in half so I don't over exert the sub. I have heard Elemental Designs makes some solid and great sounding equipment but I'm still going to be very conservative with how i treat the sub for a while.

Total cost for the entire system is about $250 dollars. I used a walmart amp kit (please don't flame) with 4 guage wire and I installed everything else myself...its a huge pain in the *** but is worth it. As you can see I went over my $200 dollar price range but not a huge amount. I'll let yall know how it sounds hopefully later today if i can find a terminal adapter on a sunday.

BTW for all you do it yourself guys...I discovered a plumbing snake ( long flat piece of steel that is bendable and long) work awesome for running wires. Just tape the wire or rca or whatever to the end and slowly route it through the car. It saved me alot of time not having to take all the panels off. Still had to take some off but not everyone in the car.

Thanks for all the help everyone!

He would be much better of with something like a JL 12W0 and a small 200W Alpine/JL/Kicker/anything that isn't garbage amp.

but he said he only wanted to spend around 200 bux, legacy is under 1 bill and jensens are 99 bux. taxes here brings total to just about 220 bux, for a decent starter. i have those now and they pound. if he were to get alpine/jl/kicker something that isn't garbage hes most likely gonna spend 200 bux on the amp itsself. ALSO with the 2 jesen 10's in the dual bandpass box, they fit right into the wheel well and you could mount your amp right beside them if you wish.

You can get a JL 12W0 for around $80 or so off ebay. Then get a JBL P80.2 for $90 off ebay and you have an awesome setup for under $200.
