Satellite radio antenna mounting suggestions
Satellite radio antenna mounting suggestions
I've read quite a few posts from people wondering where to mount an antenna for a satellite radio. I have a Sirius/Kenwood system. Had it for a year and I LOVE it. Anyways, one problem with satellite radio, is that the antenna is an indication to a thief that you probably have other aftermarket/valuable stuff in your car. I had all of my stuff stolen in July. Fortunately, I got it all back when the cops caught them. When you get a satellite radio, it says you have to mount the antenna on a flat metal part of your car, ideally the roof. The trunk lid is an option too if you have a convertible. But there are convertibles with fiberglass trunk lids and the antennas work fine on them. So, I went ahead and mounted mine on the back glass. It looks a WHOLE lot better and works great. Never cuts out. I have a friend who has a camaro, and he bought a satellite radio after seeing mine and had the same antenna/thievery concerns I did, and mounted his antenna on the inside of the back glass upside down. He has tinted windows and you can't see it at all. It gets great reception as well. So, if you are wanting a satellite radio but have looks or theft concerns, consider the back glass. Inside or out. Works great and looks a lot better than putting it on the glass. Satellite radio rocks. You'll be glad you got it. XM and Sirius are both great! Hopefully they will come out with satellite TV for your car soon! I'll get in a wreck for sure! Matt

Satellite TV
Well you are lucky, Sirius is coming out with Satellite TV. Right Now they have three channels. Two Cartoons, and one Music Channel! $23.00 a month for both

Yeah but have you seen the size of that thing in person?? That glass-mount is HUGE! It's a giveaway to "I have XM!"
My plan is to try and flush mount one of the low profile XM antennas in my car's roof. (Yes I can weld, yes I'll have to cut a hole and "sink" the roof in that spot.) I know the roof-mount antennas need a ground plane- and that's what the roof acts as- but I don't know how effective the reception will be if the ground plane is at the same level as the top of the antenna.
So until I find that out, when I finally do buy XM (why doesn't that damn Pioneer tuner EVER go on sale??), I'll just be putting the antenna on the dashboard. I've known guys that have done it that way; they just say it cuts out every now and then- no big deal to me!
Either that or I'll treat it like an undercover cop's disco light- reach out the driver's window and stick it to the roof when I need it!

Just hid one under the plastic panel over the rear drives side tire. Works just as good as it did on the outside of the car, no noticeable difference, cuts out under the same over passes and come right back like it did before. Just want to see if it’s the same in really bad weather.
So how big a difference in the signal is there from the outside to inside mounting? Try it after you’ve had the antenna on the outside for a week or two or ten (the longer the better) and see if you notice a difference. I’m curious to see if others will have the same results.
