New Component Speaks!!
Wow I finally got one side done with my new component speakers, the sound difference is incredible. I finally found some metal to make the plates from

Actually that was in my yard, why? who the hell knows, I just use what I find :0

Right now it's only powered from the head unit, but I can turn it all the way up all on that speaker and only the head unit starts to distort at the top. Amazing. Oh they are a set of alpine type R 176A. I would recommend em to anyone.

Yeah I know the tweeter location isn't ideal but they can be rotated somewhat forward, and I plan to put another pair of these speaks up front in kicks.

Yeah they do look trick, I am debating cutting a hole for them and buying some cool looking grilles.
Speaks cost 140ish bux, came with crossover, wire, I was pretty impressed, the only thing is the retaining clips they give you are a joke, I had to buy some real ones.
Free aluminum plate, but I had to buy a jigsaw

I'd be willing to be that you could get a HUGE improvement in sound quality by replacing those tin baffles with MDF baffles. Those metal baffles are going to resonate like a ****.

Type R components are retarded loud. I am running a full set and couldnt be happier. I'm running the entire set from an Alpine MRV class amp. I can have the T-tops in the trash, windows down going down the highway and still hear everything clear as day.

To answer some questions and comments.
They aren't amped yet, looking for a decent qualty 50wx4 amp haven't decided yet. I'm suprised how loud they are at like <18watts can't imagine what it's going to sound like with a clean 50w.
Actually there is little to no resonance the speaker takes up the majority of the panel and the edges have a 1/2" overlap so there isn't much to vibrate and the sound deadner inside the pocket kills the rest of it. I just caught you said they were tin so I see why you were talking about resonating. However, they aren't tin, that was some fairly thick aluminum
Passengers! screw passengers the radio is for me!
But you could always just turn it down no?
I wouldn't disagree "some" more expensive stuff probably sounds better, but what I was going for was clean and loud, on a poor college student budget, these deliver both so far.

Plus... until they pay for part of the stereo, they don't get any say as to how it's set up. I don't even waste my money on rear speakers, but in my cars that do have them, they're heavily attenuated anyway.
Anyway... just because you don't "hear" them resonating doesn't mean they aren't. There's more to resonating than hearing an audible buzz. When you use a metal baffle, you get a ringing that is easily masked by the sound of the speakers. You don't really hear it, but if you do an a/b comparision, you'll find that when mounted on a rigid baffle, the mids are a bit more clean sounding.
