Help with Pioneer HU installation
Got a new Pioneer DEH-P6600 for $150 including s&h, now to get it in.
Right now, I'm just about finished taking out the stock cassette player, from an 89 iroc,
only problem I'm having is in disconnecting one thick black wire.
I am not sure what it is, attenna maybe?
Or, more importantly right now, how it's removed.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, please put it in terms someone with NO car or electronic experience could get
=) thanks in advance.
also, installation manual says to disconnect the - battery cable before beginning installation.
I'm not posetive on how this is done, and wanted to check.
Will it hurt anything having only neg disconnected and not pos also?
The way I'm guessing it's done is by removing the part circled in red.

ok the thick black cable is the ant. cable. It just pulls out, some are harder to pull out than others. As far as the battery goes, if your smart you will use a wire harness and ant. adapter (the stock ant. is smaller than the aftermarket radio requires). If you use the wire harness you will wire it up out side the car anyways. The say to dissconnect the battery cable so you dont blow any fuses. Jered

thank you, heh i was afraid to try pulling it too hard..that's all i had tried so far. Came out nice and easy.
heh takes alot of searching to find a decent help site online...finally found a few to explain a lot of electronic aspects, ohms watts....everything really, think I'm starting to get it.
Also finally got what you meant by a wiring harness/antenna adapter...so all of the wires from the factory harness will go into that, but then I still need to connect those to the ones from the head unit? What is needed to connect the wires, preferable the easiest way...crimpers and electrical tape? (I have no idea how this all works, but will learn soon enough

The factory radio connectors will plug into the aftermarket radio wiring harness that you buy (best buy, circuit city, audio stores have em or online), then theres wires coming out of the other end of the aftermarket radio harnes, just get some butt connectors and match the colors on the wiring harness to the connector you get with the Pioneer head unit (double check all the colors via the harness's box and pioneer manual to be sure). Just strip the ends and crimp em together and I always tape em as well but it's not 100% necessary.. You don't really have to disconnect the battery to install a head unit, but it's up to you there.

Alright, got attenna adapter, and wiring harness thing. It has caps on both sides, one that fit in perfect with my camaro's stock wiring, and then one on the other side, a 21 pin one, that doesn't work with my pioneer, do I pull this off?
Or cut wires right at entrance to this 21 pin one? I bought a cheap crimper, and am guessing it is used by inserting two exposed wire ends into the part that looks like a U and pressing them together...crimping them.
Please help me out, hopefully this will be all the help needed for the HU

you can cut the 21 pin plug off and wire the pioneer harness up color for color. Just make sure that you unplug the harness from the car before you cut the harness off, or you blow a fuse. You can crip your connections just make sure you give a slight tug on the wires to make sure that the crimp is good. Also make sure that there are no stray wires sticking out of the crimps and you will be fine. Jered

here is pic of what i am having problems with, not sure exactly how the wires go, or what part of the tool to use. I'm assuming the wires face eachother, making a straight line from one to the next...are they twisted b4 crimping?

ok, yes you can go out and buy butt connectors, if you do that than the section of the crimpers you will want to use would be "C"
The other thing you can do is twist the wires together tightly and then tape them. They should be in the shape of a torpedo. In all honesty if you twist and tape them well you wont have to worry about them comming apart anymore than you will with the connectors. Just make sure you use electrical tape, not duct or scotch or painters tape (I have seen it all). Good luck, Jered

lol ok, i got the butt splicers/connectors...but the home depot by me sucks, and didn't have size i wanted, so i got 14-16, little bit bigger.
I have done these twice now, and it works perfect, untill I move the cd player around a bit, then the speakers go out randomly, and sooner or later if I move it enough the unit just turns off and back on. I'm guessing this is because the wires move around too much inside of the connector (there was a lil bit of space) and when enough of the wire stops touching the metal it stops working? I might just try twisting and taping...or getting some new butt connectors...but wanted to check and see what you all thought first.

the black wire is the antena wire, it should just pull straight out, try rotating it to get it loose, disconnect the negative only, that is sufficent for doing electrical work, the one you circled is the correct one
