Benefits of a round speaker...

Are there any benefits to say a good aftermarket 3.5" round speaker and a good aftermarket 4x6" oval speaker? How about a round 6.5" vs a oval 6x9"?

I'm running Alpine 3.5's in my dash now and 4-way Pioneer 6x9's in the back and I'm contemplating upgrading the 6x9's to 3-way Alpine 6.5's. Would it make a difference in sound quality or am I just going in circles?

They definitely make a difference. Toss those stock size speakers in favor of some good components. If you're set on upgrading the rear speakers, I recommend going with a 6" component (no 3-ways) with a tweeter mounted in a 6x9 plate.

Personally, I would toss all of those speakers you have, get a set of kickpanels, and put the 6" components and tweeters in those.

ok the difference is quite simple if you think about it first we will think about a round 6.5 inch component it will take the same time for the whole circumfrence of the speaker to move meaning it is all equal when signal is put to the speaker. now with a 6x9 one side is longer then the other meaning that the 6" sides will respond faster then the 9" side. in which causes an unequal responce due to the 9" sides take a longer time which you may not think is actually a big deal but when coming down to sound quality it makes quite the difference. personally i go with 6.5" speakers i have some blah clarions but my alpine "S" series rock tha house for the buck. check into it. just my two cents

Do round speakers sound better than oval-shaped speakers (i.e. 6x9's)? The answer is yes for most practical purposes. A round cone is more rigid than an oval-shaped one, so at higher levels, an oval-shaped speaker will distort more. The reason why there are oval-shaped speakers is because of rear deck space considerations by manufacturers. An advantage of a 6x9 speaker over a 6-inch speaker is that it has a bigger area, so it will move higher air volume, producing more bass.
