Sail Panel Part 2

Well, I finally got around to doing some more fiberglassing on the sail panels. I stretched the fabric over one of them and coated it with fiberglass. When I stretched the fabric I noticed that it looked like the back of the 8 inch sub might push out the fabric so I glassed the front part so it would be hard enough to cut out the opening for the 8 and put the a 8 in to see what it would hit. It just barely touched the fabric. So I mounted the sub where I wanted it with the back covered in tin foil so the fiberglass wouldn't get on the sub and I glassed the rest of it. Here are a few pics of what it looked like with the opening for the 8 cut out and the 8 installed and the entire thing glassed.

The edges around the opening still have to be sanded down.

Here it is with the edges smoothed out around the opening and the 6.5 sitting in its opening.

I think they are turning out quite well. I still have to take the excess fabric of the back and do a lot of finishing work to make it look the way I want it. I can't wait to get my car back to see how they fit in the car. I have only done the 1 so far. I will do the other one tomorrow. Let me know what you think of the project so far.

how are you going to mount them in? just use the stock slide in clips? i would think that would cause some vibration
otherwise, very ****

You would? J/K.

Gambit69, how much air space do you have there? How much space do those subs call for? They look like they would point right at the front of the car, is this right? I’m really interested in how they sound when in.

NEEDAZ, as for how much air space that the subs need, I am not sure on the exact amout but what I have in the sail panels is more than what I had when I had them installed in my other car in the door panels. I will probably end up opening up the back a bit to give them a little more air to work with. The 8's will be firing almost straight forward and the 6.5's will be firing at the oposite passenger of them. The passenger side will fire at the driver and the drivers side will fire at the passenger.

Here are a few more pics of the 1 pod that I have fiberglassed. As for how I am mounting them, they will use the stock slide in clips and also at the top there is a screw to hold the top in place. I had to move the screw down a bit but it still works just as well. The pods still need a lot of finishing work but you can get an idea of how they fit in the car.

Let me know what you think of them. As for how they sound? It will be a while before all the speakers are hooked up. I have to get my amp fixed to run the 8's but when I get my new stereo I might hook the 6.5's and the tweeters up to it and see how they sound.

is any one ever going to ride in the back seats? if so looks like the bottom sub is in the persions lap. is there any room for anyone to sit back there? it looks like they might have trouble getting in to the back seat. but man it is going to lok really cool!

They don't really sit out to far but I never have anyone ride in the back seat at all so I am not to worried about it. I think they look awesome and will look a lot better after getting bondo on them and smooth them all out and get them primered and painted. I am hoping to hear how they sound next week. They won't be finished but at least I can hear how they will sound. The 8's won't be working but the the 6.5's and the tweeters will be up and running.

The tweeter will be mounted between the 8 and the 6.5. There is a flat spot above the 8 and I think the tweeter can be flush mounted right there. It is not really where I wanted to mount it but I don't have any other place to mount it.

Here are a few more pics of both pods installed and all the speakers mounted to them. I also hooked up the 6.5's and the tweeters so they are running of the deck and for what I think, they sound really good. The 6.5's give off a little bass and the tweeters really bring out the sound. I can't wait to get my amp fixed and then the 8's will be running as well. Here are the pics.

The tweeters are surface mounted for now but they will be flush mounted in the spot where I have them mounted already. Just in case anyone was wondering.
