How far should a DIN sized unit stick out
I am getting ready to replace my aging factory unit with a din-sized unit. I can get them flush, 1/2", and 1" extension. Which do you think is better?
Can you post pics of your setup so I can compare?
)
This is going into an 86 IROC with a 5-speed.
Thanks!

Whatever floats your boat. It's your car afterall. Personally, I think it looks ridiculous when they stick out of the dash, and I usually build my own flush mount whenever possible. The problem is that with a firebird, depth is a major issue. You've got to cut away a lot of material to flush mount a head unit. With a camaro, you've just got to unbolt the rear radio support.
Here's what my IROC looks like. I actually sunk the radio farther in, but didn't take any new pics:

my car came with the 1/2" extension piece. I didn't think it looked that bad and I never had a problem fitting the HU in there.
I had an Alpine 7812 or something like that, old school, very simple, not alot of wires.
It was an '84 T/A so it had a simple interior.
