Help with Sub/Amp Selection

Well I really don't know too much about subs and car audio in general. My first system that I threw together was 2 12" Xplode subs (from Wal Mart) and a Jenson 680w 4 channel pushing those and some 6x9's. It was ok, and made enough bass to keep me happy at the time....but I want more.

What I am looking for is something that will give me some EXTREME SPL but also maintaining a good deal of SQ in the lower end. This is where I am lost. There's a million subs and amps out there, so what exactly should I be looking for to get heart stopping bass, but with good sound quality. It has to be reasonably priced as well....say maybe $250 per sub max. Also, any recommendations on amps for something like this? I know a lot of the bass and sound comes from the positioning and construction of the box, and I plan on making my own fiberglass enclosure. I would just like to know some brands or models to begin looking at. After researching, I am leaning towards Audiobahn or maybe a L7 since a lot can be done with those with a good ported enclosure. But could you guys point me in the right direction to start looking and possible advice on sub/amp combos that should work well together? I'd appreciate the help.

Re: Help with Sub/Amp Selection

$250 per sub? Ebay or retail, that is the question! I recommend lots of power with a high excusion sub. For an amp for 2 subs, I'd look into the many 1000-1200 watt RMS amps to give your dual subs 5-600 watts each. Also, port the box.

Check out Adire and RE Audio. Lots have been happy with those.

How much air space would I be looking at to run an Adire. Better yet, could you provide a website for them because I honestly have never heard of that company before. But I will definitely check into it. Also, to run a 1 ohm stable amp, would I not have to find a sub that ran at 1 ohm at well to obtain max efficiency in the system and sound? I was always under the impression that the ohms the subs were stable at and the ohms the amp ran best at had to be the same for the best sound. Thanks for the suggestions thus far though. Does anyone have specific combos that they could throw out there that are proven?

It depends on the amp. Some will put out full power at 1-4 ohms, others almost double output each time you step down an ohm.

Thanks for the input, I never knew that about amps. I have looked at the RE audio stuff. I love their website, but it's quite uninformative. I couldn't find technical info on the subs and definitely no pricing. But I'll look into it more.

Brahmas

Good Lord do those things hit!!! I think I may just end up buying a Brahma. From the looks of it, 1 10" in a decent ported box with about 2.25 cu. ft. and a decent amp would do more than hurt a couple of eardrums. Wow.
