what I don't get, is you people that have ipods are looking at buying $50 cables to ONLY connect the sound output of the ipod to the stereo...

why not spend a little extra so you can actually control it via the headunit, and get a better audio signal?

The, say, Alpine connector which connects it to the headunit is the line out, so that is the same sound. Also, between the headphone to the line out, the quality difference is minimal, but noticable to some..

That said, To me, the iPod makes it easier to control. I know my case has a hole for the touch pad, 3:00 is next sone, 9:00 is previous.. I have to fumble to find it on my reciever... Plus, I don't stare at either the iPod or HU while driving, so I don't care what the display says. That, and I like the iPod interface, it's quick and easy, for browsing for music. That said, It's almost all playlists for me anyway...

That's why...

If I were you, I'd buy either of these:
http://www.ipodlounge.com/index.php/...rger-line-out/

http://www.ipodlounge.com/index.php/...lkin-auto-kit/

EDIT: Actually, I don't know if the Belkin one is true line out... I would assume so, as it connects to the dock port, but it doesn't specifically say so...

Both let you charge your iPod, and have a jack to plug into, which feeds off the Line out of the iPod.. So it's buy one of those, plus that cable I showed you earlier...

However, whether you really need one of these is kinda debatable.. Afterall, the sound you hear through your headphones all the time is not line out... If you turn the EQ off, most people probably wouldn't know the difference.. However, I do know one person, and have read alot on iPod forums, or people who swear by the line out ability.. So it's up to you.

we need some info on your deck...

it sounds to me (unlikely,) that you have 4-channel inputs...

or that you have a DUAL-ZONE setup (kenwood is notorious for this,) and it needs to be reconfigured.

What Im trying to figure out is whats offered in the terms of actually holding the ipod. Connecting probably isnt that difficult at all but do any of you guys know of car mounts that possibly do this also. I dont want to just have the ipod sitting on the console or under my seat.

I had this thing that held my cellphone, you just stick the cellphone/ipod in it, and motorized clamps grab the item... just push a button to release... used superglue/velcro to actually hold the mount

my suggestion is to put the plastic side of velcro on the dash somewhere, and put the soft side on the back of the ipod...

you win. game over.

I don't endorse this mod, but it seems it should work. Note though that the IpBus input is designed for a balanced input, not an un-bal input like an RCA output.

that's the exact tutorial I stumbled upon before... those connectors work perfectly.

plus I have not heard of people having problems with this setup, seems to work fine.

I had the strangest idea come to me while poking around CompUSA here in Spokane. I saw the TransPod cradle for mounting into the car and I thought, hey...potential use for the ashtray! I don't use that space anywhere, but I could mount a TransPod cradle there! (in a way that I can remove it later if I need to :P...maybe make an insert that has just enough space for the Transpod to sit and put a velcro piece on there and on teh bottom of the Transpod to hold it down?)

What do you guys think? feasable?

well i have mine installed and its been for a month or so i love it! what i did was drill a hole in the ash tray it self to hide the wires. pulled the wire through the ash tray then i use my belt **** that comes with the IPOD and i clipted it to the lip of the ash tray lid. when it is open it works like a dream and when i am not using it i put all the wires in the ash tray and it looks like theres nothing in there.

it's a charger that can emit an FM signal from your ipod...then you just turn your radio to that signal and you get the music.

But instead of the itrip (which does the same thing), it's a cradle...so it holds your ipod in place better.

FM modulators sound poor in my opinion... you can get that ipod charge/audio only connector for dirty cheap... direct wire connection to headunit.

heh well I have an itrip at the moment (was a gift) and it works for me...I'm kinda lazy to crawl around and rather like the flexability (like being able to go to a bowling alley and they'll play my ipod's tunes for the group 'cause I just set it on top and they tune to the channel ^_^)

Then again, admittedly, I'm no audiophile so I'm not an expert on these things...just sounds good enough to me, although a bit soft :P

Why is it that everyone thinks there OPINION is some universal law? If you don't like the FM mods, fine. Yes, the sound quality is pretty low. But why do you insist on this hate of what is no more then some small electronic device. Did it call you names? FM mod can be a VARY handy thing. Why? No matter were you go, if there is a radio, you can listen to you music. Go into your friends car tune the radio and go. In the office, your home, your girls home, any where there is a radio. What's wrong with convenience? Why do you hate it so much? If you have so much hate that it is spilling over to small defenceless circuits, get over it. Some people can deal with the low sound quality for the convenience it gives them. And you know what, it's THEIR choice. Just advise them about the pros and cons.

they are asking about using it in a car....that is what my 'opinion' is based on.

My car with a decent system works much better with the iPod plugged directly in to the head unit opposed to the FM modulator. Also, here in Austin, there are so many radio stations that they tend to bleed into the FM modulator making it even more useless.

And you can take your 'opinion' and....well, you know what I want to say.

You think I'm negative, lets take a look at some of the posts you make Your Posts

Soooooo...before war breaks out :P

The bleeding makes sense in big cities, you're right. I like my itrip for it's flexability and I appreciate the thoughts and info on the sound quality difference between the FM vs the direct line into the headunit.

I live in a medium sized city (spokane) with fewer stations so perhaps I've just had better luck that way.

oooh, I feel a disturbance in the force.... the hatred for the fm modulator is weakening! we must act before it's too late!

I can see where an FM modulator is handy, but think of 99% of the people who use it, keep the unit in their car 100% of the time... they surely would benefit from the ipod interface...
