Anyone have An i-pod in there ride??
Currently have an Alpine CDA-9815 head unit in my car and planned on getting an i-pod controler for it but just recently found out that the controlers only work on 04 models so I had to upgrade to a CDA-9835 this is the 04 deck with biolite display. Will arrive on my doorstep this coming Tues. Looking forward to it. Only difference between this deck and mine is the power output, this new deck isn't as powerful but doesn't matter much since I have an external amp already plus new deck has the option of downloading preset settings from website and installing them into deck via CD.
Just thought I'd mention this to those of you who planned on getting an i-pod for use in your cars. Was going to use the FM tunner put those things suck. Sound quality is really bad. The Alpine controler in combination with a compatable deck allows you to control your i-pod using your head units control buttons and it will display the song titles and charges your i-pod while you listen. I'll post some pics of my new deck when I get it in.

Who you talking about Saigon_Bob?? Got my new deck today, probably won't get around to installing it until Fri. Will post some pics once I get it installed. Want to see how good this Biolite display really looks up close.

I've got a pioneer HU w/ the CD Changer->RCA adapter. I used a surround sound speaker mount with a cell phone holder to mount the iPod, I can easily take it out for updates or to take it into work. I've also got the belkin auto adapter, so it uses the car's power, and the belkin adapter has a stereo mini adapter plug in it that I use to go to the cd changer box. Works like a charm

Home Depot - Surround sound speaker mount with adjustable angle......10 bucks or so.
Screws - $.05 or so.
Wallmart - Cell phone holder, 5 bucks or so.
Mount the mount to the car, glue, screw, whatever the cellphone holder to the swivle part of the speaker holder, and then put it in the mount. Correct angle, put in iPod, and crank up the volume

Hey, I had the Alpine Ipod interface in my last car(Ford Focus). Pretty easy to use once you've worked it out.
I'm currently in the process of fitting it in my GTA.
The sound quality is better than I expected. And an extra is that it charges your Ipod through the same lead.
Go do it, you won't regret it.

Well, currently, I just set my ipod between the power window seats and turn to the radio station for my iTrup... As soon as I bother to buy one, I'm just gonna use the input on my Alpine. I can't convince myself to spend so much, well, $100, for something that just siplays what I'm playing on my headunit, and allows me to control my iPod.. I can already do that, plus I hate looking down to the HU whlle driving...

Hmm, you are right, sentences would make things easier. Hi is you name Jeff? I saw a car that looked like yours in one of my Chevy High's and I thought it was yours. The mag is buried right now so i can't see if it is the correct month.

Could also be the MP3 you are trying to play.
I know my iPod with the subs in the car go all the way down in the frequency scale
Here is what I did:

if you ask me there is no point of having an Ipod, unless you get the 60g model... I hate transferring files around, and I'd want access to my ENTIRE collection..
There has been significant development in the area of getting headunits to control computers to play your entire collection, so you could just squeeze a tiny computer under the seat for the same price as the ipod and the controller.
that is where this little guy comes into play....
Game Over, Ipod.

oh yeah, he should have a pioneer version out VERY soon... I may actually get it, then just stuff a cheap pc under the seat... no special (stealable) screens required... nothing fancy.
this would be the BEST thing to ever happen to the car audio world.

I have a 40gb model and holds plenty of songs and is very small compared to a car puter or whatever. I can take it inside and load whatever I want and listen to it outside of the car with head phones aswell, carry it with me or whatever. Plus the ipod user interface is very easy and recognizeable to navigate through i cant imagine really needing an actual computer in my car it seems like over kill i have a lot of songs but i dont need that many.

well also you could control all sorts of stuff... like navigation and video playback (albeit, no graphics can be sent to the headunit, but you could still get turn-by-turn stuff sent to the screen...
that would rock.

What can be done, and what is easy are two seperate things
Sure the computer nerds out there might do something like that, but overall I think a headunit with a MP3 CD player or HD or an external MP3 player is the best option for most people out there.
Plus its pretty cheap. Couple hundred for a decent MP3 player, up to 100 bucks for power and headunit adapters, and 10 bucks for a mount. Versus a few hundred to build a computer, 65 for the usb adapter, 20-40 for the power inverter, and then the time spent to set it all up correctly.
Plus, you just can't beat the iPod interface, its almost made for driving....best one handed operation MP3 player out

oh, well yeah, you could do some cheap-o interface, but I'm talking where you control all the songs with the headunit... like that $150 ipod interface.... just with a computer off in the background with all your songs on it...
once this cable is finished, all it would take is for you to plug it in to your headunit, and your PC, install the software, and you'd be done.

If I were to buy a 20g ipod or something around that size what would be the slickest way to mount it? I saw a very nice looking one that was sort of like a cell phone mount but had the fm module thing below it. Does anyone make a nice mount?

yossarian... the SICKEST way of mounting it, would be to buy that interface that works with ANY car stereo... that lets you navigate all your mp3s via the headunit... you can actually stash the ipod under your seat and leave it there...
I'm wondering if I could buy a 5g ipod, and open it up and make a custom ipod with a 400Gb hard drive... I wouldn't care if it fit in the original case or not...

this may be exactly what I've been looking for!

Get that new Omnifi DMP1 MP3 player. Its basically a 20GB Ipod in a car format. Runs on 12V, Single DIN remote mountable face plate for naviagation, trunk mount harddrive, WiFi sync for updating music library.

uh I don't normally do this... but wtfomg...
apparently it's VERY easy to upgrade the internal hard drive on this omni thing, and the unit sells for $199 on crutchfield...
that means I could get it for like $100 on ebay...
if only it could interface with my headunit...

I can't seem to find a good review on the actual INTERFACE... just the overall workings of the unit...
I want to know if I should get this, and just use the controller with some velcro... or if the interface sucks really bad, I might as well wait for my carputer...

oh well I really want have an all-in-one multimedia solution, to play videos and stuff as well...

Yeah, lack of fast forward and rewind blows, but everything else is awesome about it. I never use fast forward so it doesn't bother me. Navigation is great though, sort by genre, artist, album, etc.

must...have...thread...
but in all seriousness, the best solution is to put a pc under the seat, and use the interface cable with the headunit... no lcd screens to steal.

I have an ipod...and i just use the iTrip thingie (broadcasts a very short rante FM signal ^_^) and set it somewhere close to the radio...I don't usually need to do much adjusting other than turning the volume up (it's kinda soft)

Well thats what I was talking about, the one kit I saw was like above except had small fm thing underneith and charged the ipod also. The idea of a computer is way overkill in my opinion and in no way easier or cheaper than using an ipod.

It works, but if you have an AUX input, I say use that.

What he's saying is an AUX input (auxillary) is an input into your headunit that will play whatever audio you plug into it, so you can plug in a cd player, iPod, or whatever else you want to come into your speakers...
Some are the jacks just like on the iPod, at which point you buy a cable that has the jack on both ends, plug, plug, and it will play.
The more common nowadays, I think, are the RCAs. That is, the headunit has red/white cables on the back. You buy a cable that has the headphone plug on one end, the RCAs on the other, and plug them together...
This gives a direct connection, and a really good audio quality...
If you want the BEST possible sound, you'll want to actually bypass the iPod headphone jack altogether, because the audio has been amplified by the iPod, which is of inferior quality to car audio amps..This involves ANOTHER connector which connects to the dock port, and then gives you the same 'headphone' jack. This is considered Line Out, and hasn't been amped, sent through the EQ, or had any processing done to it...
Geez, that came out long...
