Cassette problem- really quiet

Hey, I just bought an 89 I-ROC and i put in my cassette adapter that can go into an mp3, and it comes out really really quiet. I can turn it up real loud but i get feedback and clicks every few seconds. Anyone know what is wrong with it?

Is your MP3 player set for maximum volume?

It sounds like the tape head pre-amp is muted because the mechanism isn’t seeing the reels move. The clicking is the mechanism switching sides (of the tape). This is odd because every cassette tape adapter should have some way of moving the reels, one off the other. Take the tape adaptor and move one of the reels with your finger or a pencil. Does the other reel move? Try both ways.
