Point subs down or backwards?

Ive ran the normal set up of using 2 12's pointing at an angle to the hatch glass, now im wanting to switch it up a little. Ive read on other forums and sites that pointing the subs to the back of the car, or pointing them down to the floor, will change the way they perform, im looking to get some more SPL out of my system, last time i ran it i only got 144.8

I do like having a great souding system witch it is now, but i also like having the idea of pointing them outof site, and giving me the area for more storage if i have to move some bags or supplies around in the bird.

Anyone got good/bad exp in seting the subs up to fire in different directions?
