Pioneer deck... what subs/speakers

My 91 GTA came with a Pioneer headunit installed (radio, CD, and the PO claimed it had capability with satellite radio). The faceplate flips foward (mechanically, not electronically) to insert a CD.

I'm not sure what the model number is, but the book he gave me said DFH-33 and DFH-3300 (or something close to that) (2 model numbers on the book)

That's assuming I have the correct book for the head unit.

Is this head unit any good? If so... what is a good pair of subs to match it to?

I was thinking of buying rear seat delete boxes and mounting subs and possibly other speakers in there. (Does anyone know if they come in metal, fiberglass, or anything else besides wood?) What do you guys think?

I dont need to go deaf, I just want good, quality sound that I can make loud when my favorite song comes on.

Also, the PO said he installed aftermarket speakers. Who knows if he just did the front, just did the back, or did all 4. If I decide to take the panelling off, how can I tell what make/model speakers he installed there?

Thanks,
Bill

looks like a decent radio. If you want sound quality I suggest you DO NOT put the subs were the back seat was. General opinions are that subs sound better in the hatch area. And facing either up or away from the driver....

Arg, I really wanted them where the rear seat was. Any available boxes designed to fit in the rear hatch for thirdgens? I hate the way a lose box looks just floating around in a trunk... I like things to look like they came out of the factory that way.

boxes for thirdgens hardly "float in the trunk" More like take up the entire hatch area...I suggest looking at pictures on this site.

you can get an enclosed box that fits nice and perfect in that space in the trunk. or if u want to save money and loose some quality you could just get a board to go across the hole in the tunk and the tunk is used as the rest of the box. i suggest an enclosed box though, good luck.

I highly suggest against a board. Get an enclosed box like the picture. While the picture is a custom job it wouldnt be significantly hard to do and looks very stock...

I love that picture.... where could I get something like that? I dont have the resources to complete such a job myself, and that looks completely stock. I'd just need mine to say Trans Am or GTA

Also.... how many/what make and model subs do you guys suggest? The head unit is not the greatest in the world, but I dont think it's bad. I want subs that will sound great with that amp but something that will be good enough if I upgrade headunits.

Thanks again!

You really don't have to buy one. I made mine out wood, took probably 3 hours total. Then just cover with carpet from Napa, and you're good to go.. Maybe $15 total?

while the dimensions for a thirdgen box arent as simple as a trunk box. Its prolly not that hard to do. Get a big piece of 3/4"MDF wood, a saw, some sealant, wood screws, a drill etc etc..and your good to go...Boxes made for our cars usually arent cheap...I paid like 250 for mine when I had it. But look around you might find one.

Youll want to investigate your airspace needed for your subs, the RMS wattage of your subs/amp, whether u want sealed or ported, etc..

Let us know what you decide on the box then subs etc...Well help u out...Also.

Thanks guys.... I'm kinda leaning towards that first pic... the one that's made out of plastic. Any ideas where I can get one built?

I still dont know what subs/amp to get. I want something that is at least the same quality for my amp. I'd prefer something that's slightly better, so if I upgrade headunits, my amp and subs wont need to be upgraded as well.

Heck, how many subs should I get, and what sizes? I dont want to blow my ears out. I just want good quality sound that I can pump up when a good song comes on.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Bill

i suggest you go with all JBL.
from what you said i think you would be very happy with two 10" subs in a inclosed box.

if you dont like the carpet look you can always get it vinal wraped like it did, trust me it looks AMAZING.

Yeah, vival does look really good too. For me, I just wanted the carpet on th box to reflect the carpet in the car. That said, I don't blame you at all for wanting a pre-made one, like the first pic... I do think it looks better than mine, I just couldn't justify the price...

Custom built box, maybe 2-3 hours, then put another piece in front to the screw the amp into, so I wouldn't be screwing in the car.

ya it honestly took all I had to lift my box up out of my hatch cuz it was so heavy and awkward. More awkward cuz theyre a bitch to get out of there when theyre in there...You basically drop it down and it fits snug. then you can choose how tall or low you want it. Make it a little taller and you can do like the pic and make a custom amp rack...

ok, kind of what i thought.

my budget is about 150 to 200 max. that is for a sub (or 2) and an amp, depending.

and i mostly listen to rock. so i dont need anything outragious. i was thinkin about a couple 8"s or 10"s, or just 1 10". really depends on what kind of bargains i can find.

and im in no hurry to get this system built, but i just like always having something to do in my spare time. and a box build would do.

4th Gen, right?

I don't even think you can swap the plastic panels out from a 4thgen and put them in ours... otherwise that setup would be killer.

Sorry guys, I'm back. I've been away at Fort Dix, NJ for the past week or so.

mj14sports, sweet box. However, I still love first pic. It looks like its an extension of the interior. It looks like the pic disappeared, can someone repost it?

Looks like JL and JBL are good bets.... Should I get 10's or 12's? 1 or 2 subs?

Also... I just burned an awsome techno CD (trance and progressive house)... and realized that the treble SUX in my car. I'm going to try playing with the equilizer in the amp a bit, but I'm guessing I should buy some high range speakers or tweaters or something. Here's the question. My car only has slots for 4 speakers. How do you guys set up your car? 2 tweeters in the front, 2 mid range in the back, and 2 subs in the trunk?

Thanks again,
Bill

While this doesn't look as cool as the third gen box at the beginning of this thread, it doesn't look bad. It's also premade, so I won't hafta pay for fabrication. What do you guys think?

http://www.cardomain.com/item/QLCQLC1ECF21281

http://www.cardomain.com/item/QLCQLC1ECF21081

It looks like the speakers are pointed at a 45 degree angle towards the front tho They're supposed to be straight up toward the glass, or at a 45 degree toward the glass, right?

What's the difference between both of those links? (besides the colors?)

Does anyone own one of these boxes? How do you like it?
