Looking at getting new subs
Hello all,
I am looking at getting new subs. Basically I entered a sound off this past weekend with my old setup and got walked super badly. My current setup is the following
Premier DEH-770MP Headunit
2 Kenwood KAC 929 1000watt amp
2 Premier 700watt peak (250rms) 10" DVC 4ohm+4ohm subs
2 Mobile Authority 1 Farad Capacitors
Basically I topped out at 139.4 db's
I was thinking of upgrading the subs to the Kenwood Excelon series. The subs are 1000watts max, 460watts RMS which will marry right up to my amps. Now I noticed that these subs are DVC 2ohm + 2ohm. I believe if I am dead on that if I wire up the sub in series I will be sitting at a 4 ohm load per amp. Is this correct?

you are correct... dual 2 ohm coils in series will give you a 4 ohm load per amp......so what i would suggest is if you plan on keeping your 2 amp setup i'd go with dual 4 ohm coils.. that way you could wire them to 2 ohms each...

139 isn't that bad for 2 12s. I don't see you gaining a whole lot by going to the Kenwood subs.
If you want more SPL, you need more power and higher excursion subs, which there's no shortage of these days. Soundsplinter, Adire, RE, Ascendant, Elemental Designs, etc, will all give you more excursion and power handling for your money than Kenwood.
Just make sure you have sufficient power too. I've found that power is much more important than brand of sub when you're dealing with SPLs.

If you want hardcore SPL you'll need to move a mass amount of air. This means whatever sub you go with (I prefer 12's) you'll need to run it somewhere at the midpoint between it's RMS and peak levels. Depending on the excursion, how much power you have and how well your turdgen is sealed, you should put up decent numbers.

yes i would definitely steer clear of the kenwood subs, any of them, excelon or not. (and i love their excelon decks)
i haven't heard many of the internet retailer speakers, other than 2 re xxx 12's in a ranger, and 2 ascendant audio avalanche 15's in a crx. and they both slammed. and of course my soundsplinter rl-p's, which are probably the best bang for your buck speaker out there. i haven't tested it, but it's louder than my camaro ever was, and that car hit 143 db, im thinking im in the neighborhood of 146-148. they rl-p's go for 235, or 215 a piece if you buy more than 1. they're rated at 750rms but they're well known to handle 1000 watts RMS daily without flinching, and 1500 watt burps. plus the things are probably the toughest speakers i've ever seen. when i was building my box, and test fitting one of them in the hole i made for it, the box fell forward, being so unevenly balanced. my brand spankin new 12 falls about 4 feet, onto CONCRETE. mind you, this is a 40 pound speaker. doesnt even scratch it, and it plays flawlessly.
if all that isnt enough, mike, the owner of soundsplinter is probably the best customer service person out there. plus its just cool being on a first name basis with the guy who made your speakers.

Well I decided after trying a few different subs in my car that I need new amps and subs. I sent the car into the stereo shop for a complete stereo overhaul. They are rebuilding the box for more air volume and they are increasing the bore on the speaker holes to hold 12" subs over 10's.
As for speakers we are going with the P series from Orion. 1000watts peak, 500watts RMS. As for an amp we are going with teh Orion 1200D. We are gonna run that Orion at 1200watts RMS @ 1ohm. Hopefully this gets me the results i am looking for.

1 OHM from Orion? Weird. I just checked out their website, from what I can grasp from you, you're getting this correct?
I haven't bought Orion in at least 7 years...let me know how you like that setup.

sure, why not 1 ohm from an orion amp, those amps are bad? i dont know about the 1200d, but the 2500d can be easily modded to be .5 ohm stable.
out of curiosity, how much are you paying for those speakers? i'd bet its probably too much, especially if you're getting it from the store thats putting it all in. and i really hate to tell you this, but you shoulda said you were looking at orions, i have a hookup and can get any orion amp, as many as i want for dealer prices, which is about half what they sell them for. i'll hook you up if you haven't bought it yet, shoot me a pm.
about that box, eh, dont do that lol.
buy the speakers first, or know exactly what they will be, then build the box to the specs for it. you'll be a lot happier than you will with putting 2 good 12's in a box for 10's.

this is the official soundsplinter forum, can read a lot about them there. they are not all out spl speakers, so if you're competing you'd be better off with something more spl oriented (and a hell of a lot more expensive)
as for daily listening, playing any kind of music, these are probably some of the best speakers you can get. they respond unlike any 12's i've ever heard, its like listening to some 8's if im playing rock or something, they're so fast in the transitions and fast drum beats. i have yet to hear something that didnt impress the hell out of me from these, and they're only seeing about 600 watts each. cannot go wrong with these woofers!
