The easiest way is to follow somebody elses plans, like Rez's for example. If you decide to do your own measurements, have some cardboard handy and build a mock-up with the cardboard to make sure that things fit the way you intend, then build the wooden one based on your cardboard templates, keeping in mind that you'll have to adjust for wood thickness on some of your dimensions.

The most important part is to have straight, smooth cuts so that there is a good contact area for the glue to adhere the two pieces. Lousy cutting prevents that. Also remember that the purpose of screws is mainly just to hold the wood together while the glue dries, so if you don't put them close enough, the panels won't sit flat enough for the glue to really bond well.

Most importantly, remember that carpet can cover up a LOT of mistakes.
