6 1/2" speakers in the sail panels

I have a set of 6 1/2" Focal Polyglass coaxials that I want to put into the sail panels instead of 6x9's. However when trying to mount them I found that the stock hole for the 6x9 is too large to allow me to put any screws through to mount the speakers. Has anyone else encountered this, and if so, how did you resolve it? Is there something pre-fabbed out there that I can buy? If not, I am thinking of some kind of mounting plate, but would it have to be metal? I don't have any tools that would cut a speaker hole in a piece of sheet metal. Would a say 1/4" piece of plywood do the trick? Seems kinda ghetto but I've got the tools to do that...

TIA.

you can use 1/4" no problem, just make sure to use some kind of rubber/gasket so you dont get vibrations between the plate and the body.

i used plexi to hold mine, but never really had them playing. they were there just incase i happen to have more than one other person in the car

A wood spacer will actually be better than plastic or metal anyway. I would use something thicker than 1/4" though, that way you can help prevent transmitting additional vibration to the metal body.

Trace the stock 6x9 onto your wood, then trace a properly sized round hole in the center. Cut them out, install the 6.5" into the spacer, then install the whole spacer just like the stock 6x9. If the 6.5" sticks out too far, it might be necessary to rabbet the hole (if you've got the talent/tools) or simply mount the 6.5 onto the backside of the adapter.

Axle/Gears: huh?? guessing stock.
you can get a 2 x 2 foot piece "Handypanel" is what they call it at Hom Depot for about 6 bucks for 1/2 inch.

I used 1/2 inch Ply for my adapters for teh 6.5 woofer and the .75 tweeter in my sail pannels. works good, bbut I really dont play them much. actually I dont even have them hooked up anymore. Maybe Ill sell them....
