1987 Portiac Firebird sound system help....
hey, i have a 1987 firebird formula. I am contemplating on buying myself a new subwoofer, however i have very limited knowledge on how this works in a car. My dad gave me an old "CRAIG Roadrated powerplay amplifier".
it has a 4 and 2 channel mode, with either:
15 watts(at 4 channels) per channel or
30 wats per channel(at 2 channels).
4 channel mode breaks up into 4 ohms 50 to 15000Hz at 1%THD
2 channel mode breaks up into 4 ohms 50 to 15000Hz at 1 % THD.
i Was just wondering if this amp would give me a good sound if it was installed in my car, or if i should spend some money on buying a new amp. Also , if this amp would install in my car, would it be possible to use a subwoofer with it later on?
Thanking you in advance

It's a 20 year old flea-market brand. It'll never provide the power needed for a sub.

That road rated Craig stuff was probably the best of they're line throughout the company's history, but that isnt saying much
That amp would at best run a pair of 6x9's or 4x6's.
Check around and see if you can get your hands on something 2 channel bridgeable at around 200-300 watts.

That's crap too, though certainly not as bad as the Craig.
Everybody wants to spend as little as possible, but understand that below a certain threshold, you're not going to get a quality product. I generally consider that threshold to be about $150-200 for the sub amp and $50-75 for the sub itself, though there are always exceptions.
Plus, there's always used. Used stuff is a great way to save a bunch of cash, although that takes on its own set of risks, especially with something like subwoofers. You really have no way of knowing how hard the previous owner abused them, but if you can hear it before you buy it, you can do pretty well.
