steering wheel controls

anybody know if there's a way for the stereo controls on the steering wheel to be used with an aftermarket stereo on a 3rd gen?
the car's an '89 by the way.

i did it on my '00 trans am, well actually someone else did. i had to make sure the new stereo had a remote. they hooked up some infra red sensor and kinda made the steering wheel into a remote control.

i read in the faq that this wasn't possible, but there's got to be a way right?

Re: steering wheel controls

hey thanks!

any ideas what that won't work with?
i'm not sure what head unit to get right now. i need one that plays dvd's, has two video ouputs, and is inexpensive. i know i'm not going to find anything for $100, but hopefully i can find something under $500.

i also want to put in some new kicker panels for the 6 1/2 with tweeters from crutchfield. the Q-logic ones i think.
what's a good amp or set up to use for the 2 4x6's in front, the 2 6x9's under the sail panels, and possibly new 6 1/2 and tweeters (crossover)?
i can run the 4x6 off the deck but what amp will run the other 4? a 4 channel i imagine! also, i need a deck with an amp output that's not only going to put out bass. i had a pioneer double din deck and it only put out bass. it sounded really weird with the 6x9's!

i was also thinking about putting in a sub, a 12" would be fine.

what would be a nice set up run the 4x6's in front, 6 1/2's in the kickers, 6x9 in the sails, and a sub in the compartment?

The aftermarket HU must have an IR remote.
What do you want to use it with?
