You seem to be on the right track with the HU and Interiors. As for the Sub, well most people use their entire well for subs. I know there are aftermarket molded sub boxes for 4th gens but i've never seen them for the thirdgens. IMO i would find a small 1 Channel amp that you could try and stuff under the seat. It wont be very powerful but it'll give you a little bump. Go with Kicker/Alpine V12 or the like. Dont ever get a cheap amp, you'll get crappy sound. Even the small Alpine V12's pack quite a punch with the Hatchback acoustic's our cars have. (I used to use one) The only problem i see for you putting the amp under the seat is heating issue's. A problem i face in my truck on a constant basis with two high power amps under my seat. And as for placement of the sub, you could get a small 10" and stick it into a small truck box and try and stuff it somewhere inside the well or have someone that knows how to work with fiberglass mold a custom fitted box into the hatch interior panel. IMO i love music so i would for-go the tent, flares, first aid and get a really nice well box and subs.

Since the backseats are useless, I've seen people put boxes in using the bolts they took out of the seats. I guess they're fairly secure, and you can put some huge subs there.
If you actually know people small enough to use the backseat though, that doesn't work.
