Subs/Amp Wiring Validation

Ok experts, I need a little help in validating my wiring set up for 2 - Subs. I've got all the power and RCA connectors from the dash unit correct. I am installing 2 JL Audio 12W3 V3-4 SVC with a MX TC6001 Amp. I included my crude wiring diagram below.

I wired the unit up this way and it sounds terrible. Sounds like the subs are out of phase - I've been over the wiring several times to ensure + goes to + & - goes to -. They are working, but just doing a crappy job - not much thumping come from them & they sound all garbled.

Usually, its not the hardware just user error somewhere along the way.

Thanks a lot,
Corky

Re: Subs/Amp Wiring Validation

In your picture, the "rear view" of the amp +/- signs are backwards to the "top view", so which is it? If it sounds like the subs are out of tune with eachother they might be 'thumping' in opposite directions of eachother. Try switching just one of the sub's wiring around and see if they don't sound out of sync.

edit: a couple other things that make a sub sound bad are the radio thinking it is another speaker (not a sub, so it doesn't get the low frequencies), the bass being cranked way too high, or not having enough power to move the subs (this causes clipping and sounds like the subs click).

Re: Subs/Amp Wiring Validation

His rear view of the amp is correct, the top is drawn backward.

I've experienced one of two subs wired backward before (Bazooka wired wrong internally) and that causes a very muddy sound because they cancel each other out. Not sure what both would do except when thy would normally have an outward excursion and push against the air, they would draw themselves into their enclosure (assuming there is one). I only know of one reason to wire them 180* out of phase, and that's mounting them with their magnets outside the enclosure.

That amp is 2 ohm stable. To get more sound out of those subs once you find out your problem, wire them parallel and use the 2 ohm connections on the amp. Connect the subs together + to + and - to -, then connect one of them to the 2 ohm terminals (the 2 outer terminals) of the amp.

Re: Subs/Amp Wiring Validation

Polarity is correct all the way through. I will try reversing polarity on 1 sub at a time at the amp - I guess there's always a posibility one sub could be wired backwards.

I had a small enclosure that was mounted in the well. I blew 2 sets of subs with that enclosure & I built a larger enclosure. I got 2 new subs under warranty & this is where I stand now. This is the first time trying the subs in the larger enclosure.

I will re-check settings in the head unit as well.

Thanks for the help,
Corky

Re: Subs/Amp Wiring Validation

It could be the subs in the box wired backwards. When i got mine from HB stereo they had the clips backwards where one read + and my other sub was reading + but inside it was Neg one one of them it made a garble sound. Sound like it was blown but just switch one around and see if it works and then if it don't do the other one and just keep trying.

Re: Subs/Amp Wiring Validation - UPDATE

I brought the car to Circuit city today just to see if they could test the subs. The tech removed 1 sub and brought it into their display room, put it in an enclosure & hooked it to a display amp - sub blown. He checked the other one with the same result - little to no motion in the subs. Brand new out of the box JL's & they are shot. Back to tweeter for a refund - this should be fun!
Thanks to all who responded - I guess I should trust my work after all.
