I was thinking about shaving the antenna when I have my car painted. I would still like to be able to pick up radio stations and had thought about mounting the amp in the B pillar or something so I could still have it. Has anyone done this? Would the fact that the antenna would be surrounded my metal cause it not to pick up stations well at all?

When I shaved mine I put it under the dash pad. It still gets pretty good reception. Actually, instead of trying to pull all of the original wire back through the firewall I just went to AutoZone and picked up a replacement antenna with the cable for $10, put it under the dash pad and dropped the wire down to the head unit.



I'm thinking about getting one of those wire type antennas to put in my A-pillar.

 

I was just wrestling with the same problem - only I'm gonna paint mine myself. What I decided on was the following:

Basically I didn't want a rigid antenna under my dash, or a shark fin, so I'm going to run it up along the A-pillar. Since it's simply the wire, it will remain hidden under the trim panel. I bought the extension in case I needed more slack, but I think it would be long enough on its own. I'll let you know if I have any problems.

 

That's all I did to my 92, but used the stock antenna & wire. Never had any complaints.

 

Some people put them inside the fender and they work but so do the power antenna's and you do not loose function.

 

I originally put my stock antenna inside the fender. What little reception I got was terrible. That's why I put it under the dash.

 

So I finally got a chance to test my new headunit and antenna combo out today, and the reception with the flexible antenna in the A-pillar was far superior to my stock power antenna. Not even close. Just figured I'd let anyone who was wondering about it know. Sometimes the flexible 'marine' antennas don't get the best reception.
