Upgrading from stock "swivel" radio
Does anyone have a good hint or trick to install an aftermarket head unit in a 1984 Camaro Berlinetta? I'd like to install a CD head unit in my car. Unfortunately it still has the stock swivel radio in it. I took it to Best Buy a couple days ago and the Geek Squad there said all he had for install kits was for the standard Z28 model. I'm thinking of eventually going to a Z28 interior, will this be my first step in that direction?
Thanks in advance for any help with this.
BTW, I'm looking forward to "meeting" more of you as I spend more time here. I'm liking what I see here.

Best Buy used to sell a installation kit for a "remote" mounted stereo componant. When adding an additional componant to any dash. This kit is simply installed under the dash and had an opening for the componant faceplate to stick out - like an EQ or remote CD player. To use it in a digital Berlinetta, you simply flip it over and mount it on top pf the center console ( After the original radio is removed. )
The next time your in Circuit city or Best Buy, ask the "help" if they have a generic installation kit for a remote mounted unit.

its typically called an underdash mount, u could also use it to mount the radio under the seat, I have done that in a couple classics where the owners want modern sound in their classic car

After you pull all the components of the swivel pedestal, there is enough room to install a standard depth head unit in the dash behind the ashtray. Some minor moding is required to make the opening, but all it takes is a dremel with a cutting wheel!
Here's a picture of mine (86 Camaro Berlinetta), I still need to clean up the trim plate, but you get the idea.
