possibly dumb question, but w/e
So i am looking at a sub setup to put in the trunk of my camaro and i have been shopping around on crutchfield and i was looking at an amp that is rated at 250 amps at 4 ohms and 450 amps at 2 ohms. i was thinking about a sub that is rated at 400 amps rms but it is a 4 ohm sub.
my question is this...
the amp can only power one sub, and i cant find a 2 ohm single voice coil sub.
can i run a single sub and run it in parallel with a 4 ohm resistor to get a total of 2 ohms and take advantage of the amp's ability to push 450 rms amps at 2 ohms?
sorry if this is a dumb question, but it seems like common sense to me that it would be possible
then again i am a complete noob so...

nvm. Forgot that the wattage would be halved as well.

but if you want 2 ohms at the amp why not buy a dvc 4ohm sub and wire it in parallel? hope that helps cuz your question is kind of hard to understand Last edited by Brennan; Oct 22, 2008 at 07:40 PM.

Who says that the amp you want can only power one sub. I have a mono block amp that has six 8 inch dvc subs in my daily driver(not my iroc) all seried and paralleled to get 2 ohms(actually 1.5 ohms) and never had a problem with it. You dont want to do the resistor thing. Like brennan said, get a dvc sub with 4 ohms and parallel them or get 2 single 4 ohm subs and parallel them.

Re: possibly dumb question, but w/e
wow, yeah, I meant watts.
----------
the reason I don't want two subs is because two subs are more expensive than one LOL. I figured that if I could get more watts at 2 ohms I would do it that way. I guess I will do one sub and get a better amp
----------
What I was trying to say was I want one sub and I want to get the most bang from my possible amp. The amp can put out more watts at a lower resistance (just like any amp on the market) so I was going to pair it with a 2 ohm load. Problem is I can't find a 2 ohm sub. I know that I could simply get two subs, but I'm trying not to spend too much

Yeah you would get more watts a 2 ohms as long as the amp is 2 ohm stable. Dont blame you on not wanting to buy 2 speakers as it's more expensive. A 4 ohm dvc sub would be more up your alley and might be less money than buying a more powerful amp. Just have to shop around as there is good deals all over. The only 2 ohm single coil sub I've ever seen is a kicker solo barc and its quite expensive. Good luck hunting around.

dvc=one sub with two voice coils which gives you 4 terminals so you can wire it in parallel which will give you 2 ohms at the amp assuming the voice coils are 4 ohms each and check ebay if your on a budget

Re: possibly dumb question, but w/e
if i understand correctly, a dual voice coil sub is kinda like two subs in one.
if i wire a DVC sub in parallel with itself to get a 2 ohm load and my amp puts out 450 watts rms, and the sub is rated at 400 rms, wont that overload the amp?
i mean, 400 x 2 is 800 isnt it?
maybe i dont understand how this works, but thanks for helpin me out

Wiring up a dvc sub in parallel to bring it down to 2 ohm will not double your amps total output wattage. It will still only put 450 watts to your dvc sub, and if the sub is 400 rms, then you will be in perfect range for power. Always better to overpower a sub than underpower it.
