My Sub Box! Check it out please tell me what you think!
Here is my custom made sub box. The box is complete I just need to carpet the top of the box and wire the subs. Please tell me what you think about the box and how it looks, also I am looking for help deciding on what color carpet to go with. The carpet is red inside that car but it will be hard to match up correctly so I thought about doing black on top of the box but I am not sure if it will look out of place. Let me know what you think!
Thanks, Darren

Re: My Sub Box! Check it out please tell me what you think!
I would go to a junkyard, find a car with the same color carpet and buy the rear piece. Cut off the part that covers the fuel tank hump and use that. It fits very nicely, it would be a shame to cover it in a contrasting color!

I have 2 sugestions....but first let me say good job...
ok...first, the box..you have several options, you may want to consider
1) you need to go to auto zone / pep boys and get a can of fiberglass resin (mix, with particles) and reinforce your corners, where you cut the bottom section 90* but your forward board against the tank is angled...this stuff is easy to work with, all you do is open the can, and use a putty knife to spread where you want it...
2) depending on the specs of your subs, you may need a divider for the box so that each sub will have its own airspace...multiply the height x width x depth and divide by 1728 that will give you the airspace you have...you may need to break the box down into sections and add the math together to get it right...but tuning your box to get it perfect will make it sound ALOT better...trust me...
SECOND...the finishing...
have you thoughts about either A) vinyl..easily obtained from a fabric store, or B) use regular fiberglass resin (no sheets) and coat the top of it good and smooth then sand it down with 250gt to get it level and smoth, then 400 grit, then paint it red to match.....after you paint it, sand it with 0000 steel wool, repaint, let dry and the wax / buff it....you will be pleased with the results....you can even cut a ring the size of your speaker (i.e. 12" cut the hole and then 1" around it) and then use either fiberglass or bondo, fill in the edges to make the speakers look like they are poping out of the box...then sand it all smooth and paint...

Re: My Sub Box! Check it out please tell me what you think!
Where are you gonna mount your amp?
Of course I have a suggestion..... Sink the amp flush into the top, between the speakers......Yes, you'd lose a little air box space, but after figuring out how you currently have vs how much the speakers need, you might need a little less air space anyways. And it would hide the wires on the ends of the amp real well.
And with a divided box....Much cleaner sound as a result.

Re: My Sub Box! Check it out please tell me what you think!
Thanks for the responses guys! I know that a divided box may sound better but I've had these subs in a open air box before and loved they way they sound. But I did build the box so that dividing it will be easy if I need too. I love the idea of going to a junk yard! I will for sure be hitting them up early this week to see if I can find some red carpet. But in case I cant should I buy new red carpet? Or would black look alright as a last result? I would love to mount the amp in the middle but as you can see there is not much room in between the subs. The amp I have now is 10 inches long which will fit there but I think I am upgrading my amp. So I was planning on mounting on the hump behind the seat where I have it now also because I have a capacitor and a cd changer back there as well...

well guys no luck at 2 local junk yards for red interior. I am going to go to a home depot or lowes and some carpet stores see if I can match the red, but do you guys think a contrasting color like black would look bad?

I've used they're molded carpet and came out nice. I haven't matched the colors but at request they send you small carpet square samples. Definetly worth a look man. BTW, nice box!!

Yeah I built the box for my car over the summer. In terms of Amp Mounting starting it betwene your subs always works.
I like how mine turned out (carpeted afterwards, would get new pics, but wiring is in disarray right now. Need to replace my alt, and wasn't sure what was up).
but setting the amp in the middle and then hanging it onto the back hump worked well for me.

I found my carpet at autozone and its trunk carpet but I was blessed with black interior so it matches perfectly.

Looks good. Yea red is kinda an oddball color I don't think black would look at home in there. Box looks good I was also wondering if you might have to divide it for airspace. I have been looking and getting ideas on building a box for mine.

You can get this unbacked-formable carpet ....they stock colors that are close to factory colors...pretty tough, durable stuff.

Thanks for the comments everyone! I know the sony's are not the best subs but hey they where free and they work for now...
Also I wish I would have seen that carpet post before today...might have been able to get a close match to my red from there. But against some opinions I went with a jet black felt to cover my box...Here are some pictures of what it looks like now, I will get better ones tomarrow when i go back and work on the wiring. The subs are in and really do bang!

While mounting your amp on your sub box may look sweet, it can be harmful. Mounting it on the box will make it vibrate, thus potentially damaging or loosening the insides of the amplifier. If you are only running a hundred or so watts to each sub it shouldn't be a problem; but if you are pumping alot of power to your subs, it could cause the amp to vibrate too much and not function properly. Just a heads up

Re: My Sub Box! Check it out please tell me what you think!
Thanks for the comments guys! About the amp I put it on the hump because it was to big to put between the subs and because I was also told that putting your amp on your box may not be the best idea, and I am never going to use the hatch area for storage so I thought that I would just use all the space. Also I am thinking about putting some kind of logo on the box in between the subs. Like "Camaro" in red lettering or buying a logo and having it stitched on there to give it some added looks.

Re: My Sub Box! Check it out please tell me what you think!
Nice job altogether. But you could have used the red carpet from the trunk space, that you just filled with the sub box, to cover the top. Then just used any old carpet to line the area you cut out.
Or maybe even just cut the red carpet from the recessed area on 3 sides and simply folded it up to cover the top of the sub box. That way leaving a seemless transition from trunk shelf to top of box.
It might be hard to imagine but I think that would work.

Yea I know what you are talking about, and I did think of that. I just didnt want to cut up the carpet in the car. I took some peoples advice from here and looked at junk yards for another third gen with red carpet but I had no luck. Also trying to match that carpet new was a chore and I just wanted to finish the project before it got too cold. I think it looks great right now I love how the black breaks up the red. I am also thinking about adding a design or patch or some kind of lettering on the box in between the subs to add a little more design and make it look nice as well. If anyone has any ideas of a design or patch or logo that would look good there let me know!

Also, another idea for you. I actually hid my amps and cap inside a box that I put in my hatch. I didnt want anything to get stolen so i made a box about 4 or 5 inches high and stuck all my stuff in there. I like the clean look to it. Just an idea.

Re: My Sub Box! Check it out please tell me what you think!
No its actually pretty basic to make and easily fits my amps and cap. I used 1/2" MDF board and put a fan in there so it wouldnt overheat over the summer. I put some speaker terminals on the back and side of the amp box so I could quick disconnect the remote turn on wires etc., and for the 4 guage wire and stuff I just drilled a couple large pilot holes and ran the wires through in the back. The limit is your imagination!
I'm actually up at school at UNH right now but ill be back home tonight if you want me to email the dimensions and more pictures to you.

sorry man, I took the box out of the car before I went back to school in september and stuck it in my basement. I went down there today to grab it and it was broken :-/ Must have gotten crushed by something; but anyways its not too hard to make, it is just pretty much a basic box made out of MDF with a hinge on the back of it so that it would open/close.

Re: My Sub Box! Check it out please tell me what you think!
So guys I got bored and tired with my hatch...I took some advice and ditched the sony xplod subs that I had, but those where always going to be temporary anyhow. So I picked up a pair of Kicker CVR 12's at a deal i could not pass up. Only problem was these subs are much bigger and do not fit correctly in the custom sub box I built a few months ago. So baffles needed to be made, here are a few pictures of what I did tonight. Tomarrow I still need to cover the the baffles, screw them to the top, wire the subs and mount the subs in place. Check it out and let me know what you think of the change. Also in the pictures you can see my new amp, its a MTX 801 D class amp!

Nice looking box! I removed my spair tire and installed the amps there. I also installed the CD changer in the small glove box on the other side of the trunk so it would be hidden also.

Thanks, worked hard and I think it turned out great. It is actually finished now I'll just have to get out there and take some pictures.
With your amp in the spare tire area how do you have it mounted? I'd be worried about my amp if it was just sitting in there. But I do like the idea because I would like to move my amp, cap, and cd changer to a hidden spot...
Thanks,
Darren

Re: My Sub Box! Check it out please tell me what you think!
I had a 3/4" plywood board cut to fit and covered with carpet to mount the amps to. Drilled holes for the wires to go behind it, so it would look clean. The extra weight on the right rear helped with launching the car!

Alright guys I finally got around to taking some pitcures of the completed job, so here it is...I covered the baffles in the same jet black felt and mounted the subs after doing some minor wiring. Hopefully I will keep this setup for a while if you've followed my thread you can see its a ever changing project!

I would of matched the carpet with ur interior and probably made the carpet a lil tighter. It looks loose around the subs and such.
All and all good job tho. Looks better without the xplodes =p
