What Amp(s) should I get?

Today I was speaking to my local car audio place and they suggested a PDX-5 Digital Amp and when I asked for the price I giggled inside; $600. I have been thinking about it and I was going to do the following:
  • Replace the 2 stock 4x6's upfront with something cheap (Suggestions?)
  • Put the tweeters in the each side of the A-Pillar (I can't figure out the model numbers or match them with similar looking ones. They are MB Quarts)
  • Finally put 1 or 2 amps, depending on what you guys tell me, in the top center. Now which would you guys suggest. Buy 2 cheap amps and separate the speakers into 2 sets or 1 semi-cheap amp to power all my speakers as one set?
Any suggestions are welcome. The reason why I am using so many speakers is because I want to use what I have. I am not even sure if I can use all these speakers lol, but just tell me what you guys think please!!!

Re: What Amp(s) should I get?

Honestly i would stick with just getting new front and back speakers. These cars can get very loud and sound good with just those speakers upgraded. For the amount of work it would take to modify all of your panels just to add extra speakers is just to much work. I mean if your a complete and utter car audiophile then maybe this is within your whelm. As for the sub. Yes it needs to be enclosed. PLEASE DONT do the piece of wood across the back approach. First off it sounds like crap! Second only certain subs are designed for "free air" set ups. Make a custom box out of 3/4 mdf board. As for size of the box there really isnt a whole lot of room back there anyway so for the most part dont worry about making it to big. I would worry about not making it big enough. The specs on your sub will tell you what size sealed and ported box is recommended for it. There are PLENTY of posts about how to make a box and what different options are out there for you. Just search for them. As for the amps. Try to match your rms power of the sub with an amp. Just keep in mind at what ohm that rms power is rated at. It is always better to slightly over power your subs then to underpower them. You can always turn the gains up until distortion occurs. Use a bass test cd or a bass heavy track when you tune your amp. As for an amp for the four speakers, it will deffintaly sound better and more clear with an amp it just depends on how much you really want to spend rewiring your car. Its not hard to add a four channel amp but its just a pain to rewire the speakers with heavier gauge wiring(espically the front speakers). Make sure if you run two amps that you run at least 4gauge fused power wire back to a distrabution block and run 4 gauge to the sub amp and at least 8 gauge to the four channel(four gauge if amp will except it). Make sure you get a nice clean ground and run 4 gauge to both amps.
