Can an amp "wear out"?
Can an amp "wear out"?
I just bought an entire Sony Explode system.(head unit ,front speakrs, rear speakrs)I have an older(like 15 years)Kenwood amp ,that was in my old Camaro ,that hasn't been used in a while. My question is, can an amp wear out? When I'm ready to do my install ,I only want to have to do it once.If there is a possibility that this amp could go bad I may buy a new one.The kenwood was about $129.99 back when i bought it and always worked great. It will be used to power a mild 10" sub that i will purchase in the future. Thanks for any input....and by the way I got my stuff from dealer cost car audio.i got great service and great prices on my stuff.would def. recommend them.

An amp can wear out over use, but as long as it was in a temperature controlled area it should be fine, but you have to think that is 15 year old technology and may not last that long.

yeah, the internals get weak over time and it will eventually go bad. I've been through 2 Alpine 2000w comp. amps. Generally, the higher the output, the quicker it will go out. you can usually expect at least 2 to 3 years out of one if you use it every day.

Re: Can an amp "wear out"?
many amps will last a long time-for the"old skool"
system in my car,all the amps are quite old-1979
visonik(30x30)1982 audiomoble(50x50)1987 PPI
(100x100)-all work fine, sound great, and rock hard.
Loose parts, bad solder joints, dirty or intermittant
adjust pots,or weak capacitors(especially if ran hot)
are a few of the problems you could have with an
older car amp-will just have to temporaryly hook it
up to test in the car for a day or two to see if it
sounds good with no problems.
Older japanese amps often don't work all that
good for subs-don't put out enough current to
drive subs like an "old skool" u.s. made amp can.
Amp technology has changed quite a bit over the
last 5yrs or so.

Re: Can an amp "wear out"?
My 1600watt PowerAcoustik amp and sub never miss a beat after 4 years, and I think I'm pretty hard on them most of the time. Few months ago tested my single 12" vs. two new kenwood 12" both on my amp, and my old sub still way out hit those.
