How do I make a deck fit?
Sorry if this has been answered before. I did a few searches and found some vague info but nothing specific. I pulled the old factory deck out of my 88 firebird to replace with a new deck. I have read that with "some modification" any single din deck will fit. This is where I'm struggling... I have cut out the plastic piece with that had the hole to support the factory deck but I'm still sticking out an inch or so too far because of all the wires. What else can I remove or are there any other tricks to get things to fit? I appreciate the help..

you should be able to go to any car audio shop, walmart, best buy, etc and grab an install kit for about $20. depending on the radio, some are longer than others and need either a kit that sticks the radio out a bit further than stock. also, check to see if the metal bracket is behind the radio - this can come out and give you a little more room

Thanks for the tip. The kit that came with the stereo made it install flush. I was able to modify it to get it to fit until I can get out to get one that sticks out.

Re: How do I make a deck fit?
Here is what a few members did to alter the air ducts behind the head unit and achieve a flush look.
...the duct work was preventing my unit from sliding back in place....i simply took a hot air gun, and stuck in there to heat up the plastic and when the duct was hot a pliable, i pushed it back a bit and reformed it to fit...the ducts still work fine that way!
...I noticed that VERY little air was actually coming out the console vents so i did cut the vents out in the back. Then i just put a peice of duct tape over the hole to keep the hot air from coming out onto the back of the radio. IMHO this was a poor design by GM. All that was keeping the air from coming out from behind the radio area was a sponge glued to the vent ducts where they came together. Now the floor vents work better without all that air "lost" behind the radio. Plus it looks much cooler
