Re: big 3?
big 3 - alt to battery +; battery - to chassis; engine block to chassis. i recommend 4ga or bigger.
the alt you can do in addition to the factory cable and i highly recommend fusing the cable (as you should do with any + cable in a car).
make sure you have either: a. a crimper that can do 4+ ga reliably. b. terminals that have set screws that make a good solid connection

Re: big 3?
i ran 4ga from my alternator to my battery and then 0ga for the grounds (extra lying around the shop) kinda overkill on the grounds but it works
If youre using a side post battery you should get car audio terminals for it though, makes it MUCH easier for adding accessorie/ doing this, its pretty much a battery screw with another one built into it, so one holds the cable to the battery and the second one can be pulled out of it to add the other cables, dont overload it though, i hate seeing batteries with 20 things coming off of them lol
and Dan is right, make sure youve got something that can crimp the terminals properly, you can either get a crimper that looks like a set of bolt cutters or you can get the hammer style, strip the wire place the terminal in the crimper, put the wire inside the terminal and beat it with a dead blow hammer
