Wiring harness issue
Hello,
I've been working on getting a new stereo (Pioneer DEH-1200MP) into my 82 Camaro but came across a problem. I was sent a wiring harness that Crutchfield said would be the proper stock harness on this particular Camaro and other sites seem to agree. Digging behind the dash, however, I find out that the vehicle's harness attached is completely different than the one I was sent. The stereo that is currently in the vehicle is an aftermarket unit that was installed in the 80s, so...not being the original owner, I don't know if it was messed with or not.
I attached a photo of the two harnesses. The one on the left is the harness I was sent while the one on the right is what is currently being used.
I don't want to shell out hundreds to get it installed by a professional and would heavily prefer to learn how to install it myself, as I am very new to working with electronics. Confirmation that the black harness is what *should* be on this particular Camaro and any other help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Wiring harness issue
I think that this one is the one you need. It should plug into your car's harness.

Does the connector on the right (in your picture above) plug into the old aftermarket headunit? If so, how does it connect to the factory wires in the dash? Does it connect via another connector or do you see where someone spliced the aftermarket radio connector to the factory wires?

Re: Wiring harness issue
Conman55, the harness you recieved from Crutchfield is used to splice into your new stereo harness to plug into an original factory car harness. The black plug should connect to a corresponding mating plug from the car, if still factory, probably three smaller ones, a black, white, and blue 4 pin plugs each. Your Crutchfield harness should have also came with a 2 pin flat white connector harness. Like immabs asked, how is the white squared connector attached to car harness? If it's attached directly to the car harness you'll more likely need the 71-1677-1 harness from same site that Al Hasse suggested. It's probably a little hard to get a good look at them both but the received and suggested harness connectors looked the same. I hope no offense taken Al Hasse. I just went thru all this with my 82 Firebird, had to replace my own hacked harness from my first install back the 80's, D'oh, live and learn. Sorry for the long post reply, hope all works out for you. Give us an update.

Re: Wiring harness issue
None taken, and you may be correct. I had to do the same for my 89 and replace the car end of the harness to fit a Delco deck that took stock (for post 1990) connectors.

Re: Wiring harness issue
Thank you for the replies.
A local Best Buy had the Metra harness model that Al posted, but it didn't fit. Apparently, finding a compatible harness was not going to be worth the hunt, so it had to be completely rewired. Each wire was cut off from the old aftermarket harness and spliced individually to work with the Pioneer.
Everything related to the stereo is working perfectly. Spent two days on the road with it (reason for the late update) and had no issues. The speakers, however, are showing their age. That'll be the next project...
Thanks again, guys!
