Sound Difference? Advice
I am getting subs tomorrow and i dont have time a make a box now as i am very busy. If i cut out a piece of wood and lay it over the well of my car and secure it and put my subs there for now how bad would they sound since they arent in a sealed box? would it still hit pretty hard? im new to this stuff so i dont really know. Just wondering if that would make do for now. Thanks.

It wouldn't be good for the sub unless it's designed for an infinite baffle (open air, no box).

you'll lose a decent amount of output because it is not sealed; the front wave and rear wave will be cancelling each other out. yes, you'll still have some sound, but not to the extent you could have.

I'll play Devil's Advocate here and say it'll be fine - depending. If you're looking for earth shattering bass, it won't do it - but they'll dfinitely hit and you'll hear/feel it. I'm an old fart - no desire for earth shattering bass here - but I have a 10" Kenwood sub in my hatch on a "shelf" like you describe - the "shelf" seals pretty well, but it's by no means "air tight" - and it's on a 1000watt amp (some el cheapo brand), and it hits fine and hard (for me) and really adds to the sound of my music (older rock. 1980's rock, etc). Here's a pic - 1 sub, 1 empty cover on other side, amp mounted on underside: http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/l...2RS/hatch1.jpg

I built a sealed box for that same shelf area and installed one 10 inch JBL sub and it hits hard. Its amazing what a sealed box will do for you.
