Do I need a sub with my setup? Reccommend Sub/sub box to fit
Do I need a sub with my setup? Reccommend Sub/sub box to fit
I have a 1987 TA that I am currently installing 2 amps and 6 speaker/2 tweeter setup. Should I install a sub? I have space near the spare wheel well that can be modified to fit this. I am looking for a reasonable setup, nothing to elaborate expensive. Does anyone know where I can get an enclosure and sub to fit in this area? Suggestions welcome. Thanks

i also own an 87 trans am, and i have two 12" Kicker CVR's in my truck being pushed by a 1200 watt hifonix amplifier pulling through a 2 fared SLP capacitor. up front i have kicker 4x6's and 6x9's where the stock speakers were and i have a kenwood head unit running it all, and i absolutely love the sound that i get from this setup. from the sounds of it you have a very nice setup planned yourself, but you said that you didnt want anything to elaborate or expensive... from the sounds of it you already have a fairly elaborate setup! as for the sub, i personally would say that at this point it would almost be silly not to just finish up what you started and go ahead and put a sub in! if you are looking for a fairly cost effective way of adding some bass to your sound system, a good 10 inch sub being pushed by a nice amplifier would do a very good job. another thing you might want to consider is an external bass control **** to mount under your dash or someplace where you can control the level of your sub on the go. as for a good enclosure, you can either make your own or do what i did and searched for model specific sub box's. no matter what you decide tho always remember that this is just my opinion! do whatever you feel will best suit your needs and you cant go wrong! good luck!

I was thinking of a 10" sub max as I want to have the inserted into the wheel well area but the problem is finding an enclosure that keeps the car looking clean. i dont want a rectanguar box shoved into that area.

due to the shape of the cargo area, these cars require a custom enclosure if you want something to fit well and not be an eyesore. You could do a tubular enclosure in the bottom half of the well and make some kind of trim cover to hide it. With quite a bit of cutting and tweaking, I was able to make a 1 cu ft enclosure in the bottom half of the well that just barely fit a 12", a 10 would be cake and pretty out of sight. The box is long gone now, but here's a shot of it almost finished

Do you think something like this can work? I can use my trim and cut around this box to make it fit.

It $77 off Ebay
Dimensions: 18" T-Plate 6" x 9" x 10"
Material: MDF
MDF Thickness: 5/8"

the 3rd and 4th gens rears differ quite a bit, so with all the modifying you'd have to, you'd probably be better off just building up something custom from fiberglass
Re: Do I need a sub with my setup? Reccommend Sub/sub box to fit
I dont have the means to build a box. That is why I am trying to find something that will fit on the lower part of the trunk. If the depth is okay...I can make a template of that box above and place the box through the opening securing it to the frame. Just thinking out loud

Dan's right about the whole situation. And actually, youre putting more work into making an enclosure to fit that small spare tire area than making an actual box for the cargo area. Trust me. I had the same idea.Took me about an hour to make my box,and when i attempted the spare tire spot,i spent at least 3 days just taking measurements and trying to get it to fit right,so i dropped it. If anything, get a bazooka tube for the cargo area. Those are alright, give you a little bit of power, and they take up no space. Personally,id just make a cargo box

I dont want to do what you did dylanjessy as I dont want to lose my trunk space. I have a guy at Kee Audio who says that he has some stealth enclosures that might do the trick

you could run with a bazooka tube or a tubular enclosure in the bottom half of the well too. if you have some basic hand tools, you could build your own tubular enclosure - grab the cardboard cylinders they use for pouring concrete posts and cut ends for the enclosure from mdf.

Lose the back seats, bolt the enclosure to the floor ( so it doesn't kill you in an accident).

I have a pioneer deck and speakers in my iroc. they sound good but i just bought a sound ordnance b-8p. it was 150 and its an 8inch fiberglass sub. the amp is built in. my friend has it in this trunk and since of the hatchback it should sound even better. i recommend it because it fits well and your not going to over do the base

Honestly the only way to build anything for that tire spot is to fiberglass an enclosure in the and its not simple by any means. If you want a simple setup cut a baffle board and call it a day, the full size boxes take up all your room and the ones to fit lower are a pain to build, these cars are custom job really, prefab boxes are junk made of crap wood and I've never seen one fit exactly right

OP...
You could put a sub in the bottom of the well.

Or make a custom box to to replace the glove box

10" sub in the sail panel

Wal-Mart Removeable sub box....

It looks a little more finished than just building a generic square box.

How well does the bass sound. Especially the difference between top up and down. I'm scared any sub under a trunk lid with a convertible top dampening the area between will just sound like standing next to a clapped out Honda with a system in high school.
I'm not looking for anything earth shattering but I def. don't want it sounds like ****.
