My el Cheapo sub box. Just for fun...
Hey all. I like posting pics...so I figured Ide show you my sub box that I threw together.
Started out as just something to do to keep myself occupied now that the rest of the work is done. I had everything just laying around, so why not? I had a big sheet of MDF, a sub, an amp, a wiring kit, and hardware.
The sub Ive had for over 10 years. I had it when I was in high school. Its an old school MTX 12" Blue Thunder series sub. Good stuff back in the day. I used to have a matching amp, but it blew. So a while back I picked up a cheap walmart amp. Scorshe or something like that. Seemed to work good though.
I decided to go quick and dirty, and just make a top plate to sit down in the hatch well and just let the sub free air. Figured it would be better than nothing. And it was. I ran the wiring, cut the plate out, screwed it all down, and this is what I ended up with.

Sounded ok. But the bass wasnt very tight or loud. The car had to go back under the knife, so while it was down I pulled that plate out, and started to enclose it. I just sort of started cutting things out and making them fit. Never built a box before...hardly ever worked with wood before really. haha.
I built it to get close to 1cu-ft. It came out to about .85-.9. Close enough for me. Its all countersunk and glued. Sealed the seams, and sealed the MDF itself along the bottom half incase of moisture. Got some free carpet scraps from a local stereo shop and viola.

And my biggest motivation for not wanting an ebay box... it sits down below my t-tops so the tops hardly touch when they are stowed.

Might not believe it...but it sounds friggin great! Atleast in my opinion. That sub still sounds as good as the day I got it and had it in my blazer. I couldnt believe the extreme difference between a free air set up and an enclosed set up. I had to turn the amp down past half way in order to have it where I like it. I listen to mostly rock/blues...but I played it with just about every type of music and it seemed to handle it in stride. With it set the way it is now, if I crank the volume, it shakes the windows in the house...but its nice loud tight bass...not just boooming.
My head unit (Pioneer P980BT) has all sorts of settings for the sub and high pass filters for the front/rears so I can tweak it alittle without going back into the hatch to mess with the amp settings. I also have pioneer 3 ways front and rear that were installed when I got the car...so the whole thing sounds pretty nice. Some day I want to build another box for two 10's and I want to amplify all of the speakers...but for now this MORE than works.
I know I know...its pretty bad compared to some of you guys. haha. But I wanted to show that you can take some junk thats been collecting dust, and some time and make something half decent. Maybe give some motivation to those guys that never built one...its not too bad. If I can do it...anyone can. haha.
Let me know what ya think!

Man that looks really good for a cheap box. It looks alot like the MDF & fiberglass setup I have in my 92 RS, but with a much newer sub. Mine's about 1.25 CF and sits down just like that with a 12" Memphis MOJO.
This is my not so cheap box. I have a perforated metal cover with acoustic carpet that goes over this for a "stealth" look.

Very nice for a quickie install. It amazes me how well 1 subwoofer works in that back hatch area.

looks better then a ebay box. My first box was a ebay box and it still sounded great for 35 bucks. I just didn't like the fit so I got a better one that looks like Al Hasse box.
Doesn't look fancy but it probably gets the job done by the sounds of it and thats all that really matters.

Thanks for the props! It really did turn out much better than I though. And no one will ever see most of it so no biggie.
I saw your thread Al and really like that set up. I liked the cover that you made for it, and if the cargo cover deal doesnt come through, I want to do something similar.
I think Ide still like to go to a two 10" set up at some point. The 12 is LOUD in the car. I mean its pretty crazy for it being thrown together and using old crappy equipment. But I think two 10s would sound alittle tighter and suit my music alittle better. But...as I said, it'll do for a while.
