No radio pod, scattered wires!...F'n mess! S.O.S.

My thirdgen is a 89 formula, well is was anyways( custom T/A now). So my deal is...radio pod has been absent since purchase and i have no idea wht goes where. 1st time i've even looked at this spot in car. Since i'm getting close to being finished with my car, i fig tht it would be dumb to have a clean ride and no music...lol...ordered a simple in dash non-cd usb/sd stereo for now( tax season going 7" andriod tablet 2din stereo) and have no clue how to go about this. New stereo came with its harness but dont know how to intergrate into my firebird. Should I go to like walmart and get stereo harness kit for my year and try installing my matching up conectors? IDK?...any help would be greatly app.!!!

Maybe this will help:
http://www.iroczone.com/2009/10/1988...amarofirebird/
It shows the factory wire coloring and how the factory connectors were wired.

i know alot of these car if you put an after market unit in you need to run a "always hot" wire for the memory. i know my 83 only had ign power to the radio. also, the blue wire on the new unit you can cap off unless you have power antena or an amp.

My Z28 has a similar issue- mine had an aftermarket stereo installed and instead of doing it 'right' the idiot cut the old harness out and just twisted wires together and wrapped electrical tape around the connections!!
The first time I had to remove the console to work on a burnt out A/C bulb, everything came apart- no music AND a fire hazard.
I stripped the stereo out and removed every non stock wire and halfassed connection(and people call the fuel pump access door a 'hack job'!). I think the smartest thing to do is wire in the factory pigtail again and then wire an adapter harness to the pigtail that came with your new head unit. Then, you just plug the harnesses together, connect your antenna and you are good to go. If you want to upgrade to another head unit, you just get another adapter pigtail, wire it to the unit and plug THAT in.
The two pigtails- original and adapter- shouldn't run you more that $20 between then, so a cheap, easy, professional fix!

This is what I am trying to do with my 87 Iroc but having trouble finding original pigtails. Know where I can find any?

I have at least one (may not be quite original but they're the right ones). Harness in the 93 dash was butchered and reassembled with stupid crimp nuts. Also have parts from a 3rd gen harness I cut up to use connectors. PM me if interested. Also have a couple factory harness-to-aftermarket adapters if you want them.

You might check out a junk yard, if you can find one from a non t-top car that isn't all moldy inside. pull the radio, ID the wires and lable them, then pull the cut the pigtail with enough wire length to splice it in.

At the risk of sounding like a smartass, that is what I've been doing, all cars have been picked over already, wiring and plugs already gone. Old hat at that stuff, have to when you race on the side, not street, dirt track. Did find one with a power antenna which I just found out I need so will be back in boneyard for that.

No worries mate! You'd just be suprised at the number of people who miss an obvious source of parts like a local junk yard, so it's one of the things I try to mention first.
