6.5's in the door?
any body tried 6.5's in the door on a third gen, wonder why i havent seen this if the dash ones are hard to fit something decent in. this is the stock door pod for my 07 monte, i was thinking something like this or with the tweeter by the a pillars.

Re: 6.5's in the door?
Someone with a lot more knowledge will come along(I haven't dove into my door repairs yet) but I think the big issue, especially with a power window car is a lack of clear space inside the door. Now if you were thinking an external pod, that is another story.

Re: 6.5's in the door?
i figured. my plan was/is to see if there is any room to steal in the door. the less sticking out the better. if no room is available i think i would try something different. i dont want it sticking out too much. on my monte the bottom and side toward the front of the car come out enough to point the speaker at you. but you would have to have room for part of the magnet and a little of the speaker. i havent had my door cover off before and wondered if anyone else who had might know if its possible
Re: 6.5's in the door?
I've been thinking about doing this, but the main problem is the power windows motors.
They are directly behind where the rear of the speaker would normally go.
but I have found that there are some shallow mount speakers out there, Rainbow makes some that only have about 1.69 inch of mounting depth. So you could fiberglass an a speakerpod into the door and it wouldn't stick out all that much.
I think that is the route I'm going to do, along with kicks.

ive never had or heard shallow mount speakers. i thought there would be some loss in audio quality and bass.
Re: 6.5's in the door?
I'm sure they won't have the exact same output as a typical 6.5, but these are meant for applications where a typical 6.5 won't fit.

Re: 6.5's in the door?
how much are those?
i have polk db's in my monte. i like how they are loud and free of distortion at the levels i listen to. i was probably going to get some of those again. i think they have a slim version, but i think i would have to listen to them somewhere. the regular ones are good mid to high but already dont have much if any low. you pretty much have to have subs. i dont know if im ready to put subs in my firebird yet i still plan on racing it sometimes.

Re: 6.5's in the door?
you nailed it right there. there just isnt room on the interior of the door to flush mount speakers. i have seen someone who custom made their own door panels to incorporate a nice sized speaker in the door. but you cant just cut a hole and mount a speaker in the door (unless you never want to roll your windows down again).
the shallow mount speakers might fit, but you sacrific audio quality to get the shallow depth.
thats why most people just go with kick panel speakers...
Re: 6.5's in the door?
Even though the shallows might have less bass impact than a normal 6.5, them being made by Rainbow, Focal, and other higher end companies. I wouldn't worry about low SQ with these.

Re: 6.5's in the door?
i would like to be able to open my window, lol. i never really cared for the kicks, having the speakers aimed at your feet isnt the ideal situation. i think second best would be something on the dash. i know people complain about the room there too but i have the hvac gutted already maybe i can find room for a 6.5 component there with the tweeter on the a pillar

Re: 6.5's in the door?
I talked about this a year or 2 ago. 6.5 I know polk comp will fit in camaros only. If u mod the bracket u can fit them in good. Other deeper 6.5s u will need a heat gun to mold the HVAC pluming. Kick panals are "ok" but if u have a stick it will be in the way of the clutch peddle. And th door cards are too weak to hold speakers, unless u drill them into the door. But you window would be useless. What I would go with is 6.5 in the dash 6x9s on the sides and a sub or 2. If u got a really good sub like type x on 10 or 12 would do. Or just get a short LSA cam and some blow threw exhaust.

Re: 6.5's in the door?
ended up just getting polk 4X6's and 6x9's, not doing subs at this point because i dont want the weight of amps/wiring/box

i have done it, you have to offset the speaker on the door panel due to window regulator and framing . its not hard at all, i made full lower door panels in about a day. ill post up pics tomorrow after work

Re: 6.5's in the door?
as i mentioned, i dont like the sound going at my feet so those kick panels arent something i would buy, but marrow did exactly what i was thinking. i think if it was me i would have tried a bit more angle toward your ears. i already bought and installed the 4x6's and 6x9's though. and the tunes are on the back burner now my trans went out AGAIN.

I'm going to be adding doorpods one day, but they will be to help bring a little midbass into the system.

Re: 6.5's in the door?
the door ones in my monte are by my knees and angled up pretty good and i dont really like it, the kick panels by your feet would be way off. i had a neon sxt that had from the factory, drivers in the doors and tweeters in the a pillars. i really liked how that sounded.

Re: 6.5's in the door?
having tweeds at your feet is not a good idea, however having the mids dont make a huge diference, and when i was using the duals p.o.s speakers lol, i hade 4x6 in the dash as well.... now they are jbl 6.5 mids in the door, and the tweets are on the dash , i and doing a cage and then apolstering the dash in alcantra. and then the tweets will be mounted either in the a pillar dimple plates, or in the surface of the dash, either way , i have been studying home and car audio for about 8 years. the way the sound wave travels at low kHz makes the speaker a little more forgiving when it comes to where you should place them. the tweet however should be as directly in front of you as possible

Re: 6.5's in the door?
if you have separate tweeters it probably doesnt matter if the drivers are lower. i see some come with a cup and base and you can mount them pretty much anywhere and aim them at your ears. maybe i will do something like that sometime if it doesnt keep breaking expensive parts, im already in the doghouse

Re: 6.5's in the door?
I made this because doors werent an option seeing as how i have gta door panels and electric windows, cant use dash speakers due to 4th gen dash this was my only option and allowed me to do some fabricating dont know what to do about drivers side though, clutch pedal would be in the way, thinking about tweeters in the a pillar but not sure oh and they are angled just hard to tell
you could do the same thing i did with my door panels on yours. obveously a differant shape, but same idea. that way you free up leg room and it looks clean
