Re: Does any one else have this?

I guess that's the BOSE system. Used to be an option for a short while.
If there's no sound coming through, perhaps the amplifier is shot.
In case of a new or different head unit, perhaps the system has never been connected. Look at the wire colors. They either end up at the amp or continue through to the head unit.
That's all I can tell you.

There is no sound coming though any speakers. Is there a diagram of what wires/ colors are what for this system?

Re: Does any one else have this?

I bet there are, but not in my service manual, because the lid and sound system was not an option for my vehicle's year.
I'm not sure whether it was an option in 88 models; there's an '88 factory service manual floating around the net which may help you if it was an option then.

Re: Does any one else have this?

Yup, It's BOSE. The first BOSE systems were installed (only in the Camaros ) from 87-90? and the "BOSE GOLD" system was used in 91?-92. The Bose Gold set-up used bigger rear amps (50 watt ??) and 2 - 6" woffers in the hatch panel.

This type of system requires EACH SPEAKER to have it's own amplifier. The BOSE head unit sent out a non-amped signal and it got boosted by the amps before reaching the speaker. If you were to wire those amps/speakers to the aftermarket deck - it would sound horrible. However; There is an aftermarket 'converter' that can be used when installing a factory style or aftermarket deck to a BOSE speaker system.

Since you've got an aftermarket deck you will need to install regular speakers like most other ThirdGens,.... 2 in the dash and 2 6x9's in the sail panels. Might as well run your own wires too while your at it.

If you get rid of the hatch panel & / or the kick panels, send me a PM with your askin' price.

Re: Does any one else have this?

First thing I did when I picked up my Z was take it out and put my custom sub box in!! I wonder how it would've actually sound brand new; seems like it's heavily relying on reverberated sound from those lil 6"ers...

John - thinking about getting rid of mine, pm me an offer

Re: Does any one else have this?

the original subs in my 87 "premium sound" firebird sounded pretty good back then. i got it in the early 90's. back then that was really awesome for a stock setup. mine has the 5.25 in subs with a band pass box in the rear sail. but as they all do they blew and i went to the junk yard and got 6x9 plates out of a base camaro and use regular aftermarket stuff

Re: Does any one else have this?

I bought an 88 GTA last winter with that "SUB" option ! I've got most of the interior restored but no engine or engine bay wiring installed yet. I'm not looking forward to the problems, bad parts and diagnosis time that the SUB system will probably require,.... but I AM really looking forward to plugging it all back in & hearing what that Pontiac "SUB" system sounds like !

There's a BOSE system install in my Berlinetta now and ( when all the amps work right ) it sounds real good. It's not very loud, but it is a real "crisp" sound.
