factory wires??
factory wires??
what are the brown and grey wires for that run into the harness that connects to the back of the factory stereo in an 89RS. I am trying to install a new stereo and can't get it to work. Those two wires don't have any thing to hook into in the new stereo.

The brown is the interior light dimmer. The new deck has no use for it. I don't remember what the gray wire is.
All you should need to make it work is the battery, ignition, ground, remote, and speaker wires. This would have been considerably easier for you if you coughed up the $10 for a wiring harness.

Yeah, dude, I really hope you didn't go and cut up the wiring of your car for no reason.
Anyway, brown and gray are BOTH for the dash lights. One is variable with the dash dimmer, and one is constant 12V+ anytime the parking lights are on.
As Jim said, although there are rare exceptions, most aftermarket radios don't hook up to either of these wires. (The aftermarket radio will just light up bright anytime it's on.)
Make sure that you tape or cap off all of your unused wires, because otherwise they'll eventually brush against the back of the radio and blow the dash light or parking light fuse.
